Sophie Cunningham has become a household name since joining the Indiana Fever. However, this increased recognition took a dangerous turn as a man accused of stalking her has now been charged.

An Indiana-based man named Kevin Singh was arrested and charged on Wednesday for allegations of stalking and sending Cunningham threatening and explicit messages. Singh, 49, has been hit with multiple charges, including a felony for stalking and intimidation, as well as a misdemeanor harassment charge. Cunningham reportedly informed the investigators of nightmares directly because of Singh’s constant messages and harassment.

In September 2025, things escalated when Singh hand-delivered a package addressed to “Sophie” at Gainbridge Fieldhouse containing a letter and a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt sprayed with men’s cologne.

Then, in February this year, Singh’s conduct reportedly “became increasingly threatening after he was contacted by team security.” But that’s not all.

The Indiana man allegedly sent numerous explicit messages in April, too. One of the messages featured the text, “You’re literally down the street from me!”

Responding to these, Sophie Cunningham and her legal team sent the 48-year-old a cease-and-desist letter on April 30. But he did not stop, responding with more such messages instead.

“The internet has made it easier than ever to target, harass and intimidate others. Threats of violence, whether face-to-face or behind a keyboard, will be taken seriously,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement (via ABCNews). “Coming forward is never easy, regardless of a person’s position or public profile. The victim is setting an example by speaking out.”

Singh is currently already on probation in Hendricks County, Indiana, after he pleaded guilty in July 2025 to two felony counts of invasion of privacy.

This incident with Cunningham further reinforces the need for better player safety in the WNBA. Recently, the league has seen an increased number of cases among its top stars.

In July 2025, a Texas man was sentenced to over two years in prison for sending harassing online messages to Caitlin Clark. He was arrested just one mile away from Clark and the Indiana Fever camp. In December 2024, a 40-year-old man was charged with stalking Paige Bueckers as well. Angel Reese, on the other hand, has revealed in the past that fans have stalked her to her home as well.

“When it comes to death threats, like, I’m talking about people have come down to my address, following me home, it’s come down to that.”

Player safety is a serious task for the WNBA. Stars like Breanna Stewart, DiJonai Carrington among others have revealed intense security around the team. Their social media activity is also tracked according to Stewart to ensure they don’t give out their exact location. The charter flights implemented in the last couple of years help this cause as well.

In 2025, Cathy Engelbert assembled an offseason task force, creating a “multi-dimensional approach to combating hate and vitriol.”

The league faces these growing pains as their popularity goes up over time. And this unfortunate incident with Sophie Cunningham further sends a signal that the league cannot afford to slip up.
