The WNBA 2025 season is picking up from where it left off– growing interest, top new talent, and rivalries that define the game. The peak embodiment of it all? The Indiana Fever vs the Chicago Sky. A meeting that drew 3.3 million viewers will be back for another showing on the 17th of May. And this time, we have more exciting young talent spicing things up. For the Sky, that’s Hailey Van Lith.
Once Angel Reese’s teammate at LSU, HVL is now ready to take charge of the Windy City franchise’s backcourt. She averaged 6.0 points and 4.3 assists per game in the preseason before making the final roster. The guard would also impress enough to have the WNBA GMs place her among the top steals this draft. But spectators might have to wait longer for her debut. No, the game has not shifted, but the update on HVL is not encouraging.

What Happened to Hailey Van Lith?
After having limited minutes in the preseason, Han Van Lith had an opportunity to prove her potential when she took the court on Saturday. However, in unfortunate news, the Chicago Sky have listed her as questionable for the upcoming game. Underdog WNBA reports the cause to be an ankle injury.
Van Lith could still play, as the questionable designation does not rule her out completely. She could be tested on matchday again to confirm her participation in the game. However, considering the start of the season, HC Marsh and the back office would not rush any of their players on the court unless proven 100% fit. Can the Chicago Sky cope without Van Lith if the guard is rested or not available for the game?

The former TCU star was a crucial contributor in the preseason, perfectly fitting Tyler Marsh’s theme of ‘not stay single-dimensional’. In his words, the rookie “showed no fear… [was] on the ball a lot more… creating for others.” HVL was noticeable on both ends of the floor that game, putting up 7 points and 3 rebounds in 13 minutes. So sure, the guard fits well in Chicago’s scene and can deliver valuable minutes, But with good perimeter additions, the Sky can do without her for about one game.
Besides, seems like she would back on the court before long. HVL didn’t have any major physical injury in the past, though, she has suffered from plantar fasciitis– a condition that causes inflammation of the foot’s bottom muscle. But that’s as much as there is. The Sky haven’t made any official announcement regarding the injury, so it is unlikely to be grevious.

Chicago Sky injuries ahead of season opener against the Indiana Fever
The Chicago Sky finished 10th last season with a 13-27 record. But in revamping the roster this year, the franchise is ensuring they do not land anywhere close to that number. Tyler Marsh hasn’t only ensured to build a roster around Reese and Kamila Cardoso, but he also brought in suitable coaching staff.
The preseason ended with a 2-1 record, showcasing a promising start to the new era. But ahead of the season opener, the side will be without experienced guard Moriah Jefferson. While Hailey Van Lith is listed as questionable, Jefferson is confirmed to miss the game. As per the ESPN report, she suffered a leg injury, with her return date yet to be confirmed. So the Sky needn’t worry about more.
