Kelsey Mitchell has spent her entire WNBA career wearing an Indiana Fever uniform. Now, as the four-time All-Star prepares to enter free agency with the ability to choose her own fate, Cheryl Miller has made it clear that Indiana cannot afford to let her decision be one that puts the team in jeopardy.

During a segment on WNBA Showtime on Peacock, Miller, along with her co-hosts, was discussing Kelsey Mitchell’s upcoming free agency just days after the Fever were eliminated by the Las Vegas Aces in the first round. During that segment, Miller delivered a blunt message to the Fever, highlighting that retaining their starting guard should be the team’s top priority. The segment was clipped and posted to X by a fan.

“You better make that young lady happy,” Miller said in the clip. “You better keep Kelsey Mitchell there. Otherwise, Indiana Fever, it’s a wrap. It’s a wrap for you if that young lady leaves.”

For those unaware, this offseason marks the first time in her career that Mitchell is no longer core-eligible, which means that she is an unrestricted free agent, giving her the ability to negotiate freely with any team in the league. During the Indiana Fever’s exit interviews, Mitchell made it clear that she’s going to make the decision she thinks is best for her career.

“Just think I got to be selfish about where my career is going a little bit in terms of, like, some of the things as I get older, what’s important for me,” said Mitchell. “Whether it be winning, whether it be my own individual success. I worked my tail off to be here, though. So, whatever I do, it’s going to come from a selfish standpoint. I’ll be honest about that.”

Her leaving the Fever would be a massive blow to the team, considering how important she has been to their recent success. Mitchell had the best scoring season of her career in 2026, with a league-high 1,086 points, the most anyone has scored in a single season, while setting another league record with 27 straight games scoring 20+ points.

Mitchell also led the team to the WNBA Semifinals in 2025, a season that saw Caitlin Clark miss most of the regular season and all of the playoffs, going down in five games in Round 2 to the eventual champion Las Vegas Aces.

The Fever want to keep her on the roster. During her exit interview, GM Amber Cox made it clear that, as Miller suggested, Mitchell is “obviously a major priority” for the franchise.

“She has a lot of equity in this franchise and has put in a lot of time,” she said. “Kelsey obviously has the opportunity and has earned the right to explore what other opportunities are out there, but our goal is for her to be a Fever girl for the rest of her career.”

However, Mitchell coming back is not a certainty. As she heads into free agency, Mitchell, who was on a super-max contract over the last two seasons, will likely command top-of-the-line offers from several teams around the league, and the Fever might not be able to match those kinds of offers.

The team has already signed Aliyah Boston to an EPIC contract extension, which will kick in at the start of the 2027 season, taking up about 20% of the team’s salary cap. Clark is also eligible for an EPIC extension, which would raise her to about 17% of the cap. Add Lexie Hull, Monique Billings, Raven Johnson, and Makayla Timpson to that, and the ability to offer Mitchell a competitive salary feels uncertain at best.

Only time will tell if Mitchell will ever suit up for the Fever again, but for Miller, it’s clear that the team’s success hinges on being able to retain her.
