Thirty-point games are impressive on their own. When two teammates produce them together, it becomes something special. But when they do it in back-to-back games, it becomes historic. Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell just did exactly that. And for their head coach Stephanie White, the achievement carries a nostalgic resonance, because she believes their explosiveness is reminiscent of a backcourt the league has not seen in years.

Speaking to reporters in the postgame press conference, a video of which was on the Fever’s YouTube page, coach White was not shy about her admiration for Clark and Mitchell, describing their collective performance as truly remarkable. And when asked which legendary backcourt duo came to mind watching them play, she did not hesitate to draw a comparison with Phoenix Mercury legends Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter.

“The only other two that I can think of off the top of my head are DT and Cappy. I mean, when you think back to those Phoenix days, like they were a dynamic backcourt that could put up big numbers. Could both get their own shot, could get other people involved. But it’s been a long time since we’ve seen the explosiveness of two players like Kelsey and Caitlin have been doing, and been doing it with remarkable consistency.”

Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell each scored 34 points to power Indiana to a comprehensive 111-91 victory over the Connecticut Sun. Clark finished the night with 34 points, 12 assists, five rebounds, and three steals. Mitchell complemented her brilliantly with her own 34 points, four assists, three rebounds, and a steal.

This was the second consecutive game in which both players reached that threshold. In their previous game against the Chicago Sky, Clark delivered 37 points and 10 assists, while Mitchell scored 30 with four assists. Together, those two performances became the first time in league history that the same two teammates have recorded consecutive 30-point games. It was also the third game this season in which both Clark and Mitchell scored at least 30 points in the same game.

Beyond the shared record, Clark’s individual achievements in this stretch have been equally staggering. She became the first player in WNBA history to produce consecutive games of 30 points and 10 assists, and is now the seventh player in league history with consecutive 30-point double-doubles. The Connecticut Sun game also marked her 13th double-double of the season, her fifth game this year with at least 30 points and 10 assists, and her sixth career game hitting those combined benchmarks, more than all other players in WNBA history combined.

All of these numbers further underline how historically significant what Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell are doing this season has become. And they fully justify White’s comparison to Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter, a duo who, at the peak of their collective powers, orchestrated a historic sweep of the league’s highest individual and team honours in 2009.

Taurasi won the regular-season scoring title, the regular-season MVP, and the Finals MVP that year. And with Pondexter already the Finals MVP in 2007, they became one of the rare teammate duos to each hold a Finals MVP trophy while playing alongside each other.

Without doubt, the performances Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell are producing this season have earned every all-time comparison being drawn. However, what would truly enshrine their partnership alongside the greats is the same thing that cemented Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter: a WNBA championship at the end of it.

It’s now four games left until the playoffs. But the team, as well as the entire league, will now go on a 17-day pause from August 31 through September 16 to accommodate the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, which takes place in Berlin, Germany. It’ll be interesting to see if they maintain this same level of performance and momentum when the season resumes.
