The season of cuts is in full swing. As teams scramble to finalize their squad, Stephanie White has made a decision on her 11-player roster. Having already waived Bree Hall and Jilliane Alleyne, the roster was down to thirteen before their game against Atlanta. But it now appears that the final wave of cuts is done with, ending yet another WNBA dream. And while gloom set over the budding star and the Fever, another fandom whole sharing a whole other sentiment.
The Fever’s last waiver came down to forward Makayla Timpson and guard Jaelyn Brown. After their final preseason game against the Dream, White admitted the decision hasn’t been easy. “It’s a tough job to compare those two because they bring such different aspects to our team and to our game,” White said in the post-game interview. “[Jaelyn Brown] is dynamic, she’s athletic, she has the ability to get downhill…she’s a great rebounding guard.”
As a contrast to Brown, Makayla Timpson is a big with high upside on the defensive end and a remarkable 6’10” wingspan. The HC was impressed. “She doesn’t try to force things. She allows things to come to her. She plays with great pace as a young player,” White said of the forward. Talk about the dilemma.

So for Stephanie White, relief arrived earlier today when the “worst part” of her job was over– the Fever made the decision to waive Jaelyn Brown. The guard came to the Fever from Dallas as part of a 4-team trade in February but hasn’t found a place on the roster. She was on a non-standard training camp contract, which means she is a free agent now. However, with teams having almost finalized their squads and the hardened salary cap once again spelling trouble, it’s possible Jaelyn might not be a part of the W to start the season.

“It’s really difficult,” Coach White said ahead of the Fever’s announcement. “I think we’re looking for, No. 1, someone who is gonna stay ready so they don’t have to get ready. Somebody who’s gonna be probably in and out of rotation, making sure that they’re okay with that, but also someone who’s gonna be a contributor on the floor and off the floor, I mean, in the locker room, in the huddles, being engaged. So it’s time to get to this position in the season, having to make that last cut. It makes it really, really tough.”
While the frenzy of cuts before the WNBA season inviting reactions is nothing new, this time it had nothing to do with the structural limitations of the league. In a hilarious series of events, fans of the Celtics were left utterly shocked as they believed Boston had waived the Finals MVP. And with Jayson Tatum having torn his Achilles in Game 4, fans were ready to assume the worst.

Hilarious reactions come in from confused Celtics fans
As news of Jaelyn Brown’s cut made its rounds on the internet, certain fans thought Celtics guard Jaylen Brown was the one who had been let go. While some fans realized the misinterpretation instantly, others were left completely lost. And with their season appearing to near its end, down 3-1 to the Knicks, a fan could already see what was coming. “I know the comments will not disappoint here this has to be an all timer” they posted on X expecting hilarious interactions.
Jaelyn Brown is a relatively new name in the pro basketball community having made her debut only last season. Celtics’ Brown, however, a championship, a Finals MVP, 4x All-Star honors, the list goes on. So fans were quick to speculate the post was on purpose. “Underdog knew what they were doing,” came a comment.

But with the Celtics tanking and Jayson Tatum moved to courtside, fans couldn’t help but poke fun at the misery. They have one last chance back home and seems like the spectators are already accepting their fate. Strange that its under a WNBA post, but they aren’t missing the opportunity. “And yall think he’s leading the Celtics back down 3-1″ a fan posted furthering the joke.
Another just shared a GIF of Jaylen Brown appearing shocked, which we’re sure he would be too if he heard he got waived. Especially considering his lucrative $304 million contract extension in 2023 and the need of the hour for him to step up. He’s also been leading the team in scoring after Tatum. So shocked would be an understatement.
One fan took it another step ahead and made an enquiry about Brown’s WNBA career posting, “He play for the fever too?” which was met with a witty response from another fan who corrected him. “Played*,” read his tweet.

While the fan reactions were not how WNBA’s Brown had expected, it once again highlights the banter loving nature of the NBA’s fanbase. But as Jaelyn Brown loses out on her spot, Celtic fans can remain assured their star is not going anywhere. Not with that contract.
