Ahead of Saturday’s WNBA All-Star Game, Caitlin Clark sat with ESPN’s Malika Andrews and called the media narrative “emotionally exhausting” and “draining.” Reacting to the Fever star’s comments, ESPN’s Monica McNutt countered Clark, saying that the 2024 Rookie of the Year also considers how her on-court actions could affect the broader narrative.

“Caitlin Clark is 24; she is a shining star in the galaxy of the WNBA. But I do think as she continues to matriculate through this league, there is room for a little bit more accountability and self-awareness in terms of her role in the larger sisterhood, if she sees it that way, of the WNBA,” said McNutt. And that’s not something independent WNBA analyst and podcast host Ben Daniel could stand by.
“Monica McNutt hears Catlin Clark explain that the media’s false characterizations are emotionally exhausting and immediately responds by falsely characterizing her again. You cannot parody this level of arrogance,” Daniel said on July 27.
“You’re just another one of these jealous, envious, haters in the WNBA. It’s manufacturing a fictional version of her, attacking that fiction and calling it analysis. This isn’t journalism.”
“We don’t often get to hear Caitlin Clark’s perspective in quite this level of honesty. And this is an important conversation to continue to have with empathy for everybody involved.”
However, McNutt isn’t the only analyst who has been critical of Clark. USA Today columnist Nancy Armour also claimed that Caitlin Clark’s “flopping” was the root cause of the online backlash that her WNBA peers have received, and that Clark, protesting referee calls, had become “dangerous” for other players.
Armour herself received massive backlash online for her column. USA Today had to make edits and add a disclaimer that the column was solely the journalist’s opinion.
On the flip side, Daniel is among multiple analysts who have questioned the media coverage surrounding Caitlin Clark and the League. Veteran sports anchor Rob Parker revealed what he felt on the July 21 episode of The Odd Couple with Rob Parker & Kelvin Washington show.
“This is why I don’t partake in the WNBA. And I think that you can’t take this league seriously. The last thing you talk about, Kelvin, is basketball. Every day somebody’s feelings are hurt, or some coach has to be reprimanded, or some player has to be reprimanded about everything other than basketball.”
It’s been over a month since Alyssa Thomas’s flagrant foul on Caitlin Clark, but the debate regarding the underlying issues seems far from over.
