Kelsey Mitchell is coming off a career-high 24.7 points per game, and she is about to enter unrestricted free agency after nine seasons in Indiana. That alone has made her future the biggest question facing the Indiana Fever this offseason. So when fans began picking through her social media this week, the internet did what it always does and started connecting the dots.

The latest clue is a small detail on Instagram. Fans discovered that Mitchell no longer follows the Fever’s official account. It is not clear whether she deliberately unfollowed the team, as she has not announced that she is leaving. Still, with free agency coming, plenty of people read it as a sign.

The timing is what fuels the guessing. Mitchell has played only for Indiana since the Fever drafted her second overall in 2018. This time, she has the choice.

At her exit interview, she said, “I have to be selfish,” and talked about how hard it is to “compete for fans that may or may not like you.” She also said that if she showed everyone her DMs about the hate that comes with being a Fever player, “it’s a lot.”

Her situation has also gotten murkier. The Fever fired general manager Amber Cox on Oct. 23, after team president Kelly Krauskopf stepped down. Cox had said the goal was for Mitchell to “retire with the Indiana Fever.”

Caitlin Clark has also made her wish clear, adding that she hopes to play alongside Mitchell for the rest of her career.

“We need her. We love her,” Clark said.

According to the calendar, free agents can start talking to teams on Feb. 4, and signings begin on Feb. 16.

Then came another bit of fuel. Mitchell posted a personal TikTok video, and Sophie Cunningham, who is also an unrestricted free agent, wrote, “Muwahaha okay miss PDA.” Angel Reese, who plays for the Atlanta Dream, wrote, “Love this for youuuu.”

The comments say nothing about her plans, but fans had plenty to say.

“😩😩😩 this hurts”

It is easy to see why. Mitchell has spent her entire career in Indiana, and she became the franchise’s first $1 million player in April. She averaged a career-high 24.7 points this season and finished third in MVP voting.

“Mitch is so good, but CC made her good a lot of times”

The numbers show a steady climb. Kelsey Mitchell averaged 18.2 points in 2023, 19.2 in 2024 (Clark’s rookie year), 20.2 in 2025, and 24.7 this year. She also earned first-team All-WNBA honors in 2025, when she helped lead the Fever to a deciding Game 5 of the semifinals with Clark sidelined. This year, she and Clark combined for 47 points a game. Clark said she hopes she has helped lift Mitchell’s game, and also credited her for lifting her own.

Another fan took a different approach, writing, “Whatever makes her happy.. she’s a free agent so she can go wherever she wants.. LeBron did it so is Kelsey”

Kelsey Mitchell is free to sign with any team, which was not the case last offseason, when the Fever used a core designation to hold her rights. LeBron James’ free agency this summer drew similar buzz. He told the Lakers on June 30 that he would play elsewhere; fans spent weeks guessing which team he would pick, and he eventually left Los Angeles and joined the 76ers.

“When she exposed the racist DM’s it was over then,” pointed out one fan in the comments.

What Mitchell actually said at her Oct. 3 exit interview was “If I showed y’all my DMs about the hate… it’s a lot.” She did not release the messages, as far as reports show. Cox said that day that attacks on the fanbase have “no basis in reality,” and Clark said she does not stand for anyone using her name to push hate or discrimination.

Reflecting what Kelsey Mitchell was referencing, one fan wrote, “Bye Kelsey!!! Just remember that the grass isn’t greener on the other side! Hope you really leave cause you really overrated!!!!”

The stats don’t show a player with a limited game. Mitchell shot 50.9% from the field and 45% from three, set the single-season scoring record with 1,086 points, and put together a record run of 27 straight games with 20 or more.

For now, all anyone really has is an Instagram follow, a TikTok comment section, and a lot of unanswered questions. Mitchell has not said where she will play, the Fever have no general manager, and it will be weeks before the real talks begin. Until then, fans will keep guessing.
