The Indiana Fever guard steps up for something bigger than wins. She announces her push for the Mark Mitchell Classic, a high school tournament honoring her late father. Mitchell then drops an emotional Instagram message urging fans to join. That call hits hard amid her own comeback story. Now she channels the same grit her dad instilled in players. The tournament kicks off today, blending legacy with live action.

Mark Mitchell shaped Cincinnati basketball from the ground up, posting a 221–50 record over 11 seasons at Taft High School and capping that run with a dominant 25–1 Division III state title season in 2011. That run still defines Taft’s program today. Current athletic director Austin Gullett credits Mitchell for the culture driving the team’s 15-7 start this season.

Mitchell’s influence extended beyond high school. He assisted Ohio State’s women’s team from 2013 to 2018. Later, he led the men’s basketball team at NAIA Wilberforce University through 2024. “If you loved my Pops, his passion for the game, and his love for seeing YOUTH STRIVE THRU HOOP, show up today and Monday! the legacy lives on…,” Mitchell wrote on Instagram.

Eight teams battle in the inaugural event at Taft High School. The lineup includes the host Taft Senators, Goshen, the Oyler Madhatters, Seven Hills, Dunbar from Dayton, Woodward, Shroder, and Western Hills. Fifth Third Bank sponsors the two-day clash.

Day 1 tips off with Oyler versus Seven Hills at noon. Taft faces Goshen next, featuring a halftime nod to the 2011 champs. Dunbar meets Woodward at 4 p.m.
Practical details matter for fans. Entry is cash only, with concessions following suit, and a clear bag policy will be in effect.

This setup revives Mitchell’s youth focus. He turned around Taft after 10 straight losing years. His first season delivered a 22-3 record and a city crown. Mitchell’s own path fueled that success. He starred at Princeton High School in multiple sports. His play helped snag a 1983 Division I state title.
