A’ja Wilson, at 30 years of age and in her ninth season in the WNBA, has just marked another watershed moment for the WNBA with her scoring dominance. She has now become the first player in WNBA history to record multiple 1000+ points seasons. The Las Vegas Aces wasted no time in hyping up their center once again for the MVP as Wilson reminds the league why she is considered one of the greatest to ever play in the W.

At the time, A’ja Wilson’s effort of 30 points against the Seattle Storm on Sunday was enough to take her tally past the 1000-point mark for the second time in her career. She previously had a 1000+ points season in 2024, where she scored 1,021 points. The Aces beat the Storm 114-77, as Wilson added eight rebounds and four assists. She stood at 991 points after the Aces’ previous game against Seattle, where she scored another 29 points.
A’ja Wilson is leading the Aces’ charge towards back-to-back championships this season. The four-time WNBA MVP is putting up numbers to justify another MVP win this season, averaging 26.1 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 2.0 blocks per game this season. She leads the league in points and blocks per game and is fourth in rebounds per game, making a solid case for Defensive Player of the Year.
More than the numbers, the records keep falling for the Aces’ center. Earlier in the season, in June, once again against the Seattle Storm, A’ja Wilson became the fastest player to reach 6,000 career points, achieving this feat in only 278 games. She scored 34 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists, and three blocks that game. Wilson broke Diana Taurasi’s record of 291 games by a comfortable margin, making the case for her status as one of the GOATs.
Aces head coach Becky Hammon addressed this in the postgame media availability after the Seattle game.
“It seems like she’s breaking a record every day, so you start to lose track of them. Nothing surprises me with that woman. I mean, tonight she has nine dimes. She just continues to get better.”
“There’s just really not any offensive area that she can’t do,” she added. “She can put the ball on the floor, she can get to her middy, she can put her back to the basket, she can step out, shoot threes, she shoots free throws…Her expansion of her offensive floor game, I think, has just made her virtually unguardable.”
When A’ja Wilson surpassed 6,500 career points this season, she became only the second player in WNBA history with at least 6,500 points, 2,500 rebounds, and 500 blocks. She reached the scoring milestone 106 games faster than Candace Parker.
Previously, in 2024, Wilson set the record for the highest-scoring season in WNBA history. While Indiana Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell surpassed that record just a couple of days back, she had nothing but praise for the Aces’ veteran.
“Who I know A’ja Wilson to be, she’s the GOAT, one of the GOATs for a reason,” Mitchell said after surpassing Wilson’s 1021-point mark.
With three games remaining in the regular season, there is a chance for Wilson to improve her 2024 point total. Perhaps if she had not missed game time this season, she would have already surpassed her previous single-game scoring mark. And there is a possibility that Wilson reclaims the WNBA’s single-season scoring record from Mitchell, considering that she has scored a staggering 86 points in her last three games.
The Aces are 28-13 for the season, sitting third on the leaderboard, and will look to finish the season with a higher seeding.
Although hit with injuries to some key players, the Aces are still one of the favorites for the WNBA title. Any team with A’ja Wilson cannot be ruled out of contention. With Wilson dropping out of the FIBA World Cup, she looks primed for a deep postseason with the Aces.
The Aces will face a tough test on their path back to the WNBA finals. All the teams have improved and are in form. Unlike last year, the Aces don’t have the best odds to win the title, with the Lynx leading the pack at -120, per the FanBoard release last Tuesday.
However, if there were ever a player to turn the odds in their team’s favor, it’s A’ja Wilson.
