“𝐓𝐇𝐑𝐄𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐀 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐃 🏆🏆🏆”. That is what the Las Vegas Aces wrote in their X post that commemorated yet another championship win for the team. 4 years ago, this team had not only failed to win even a single championship, but they had qualified for the Finals only 2 times in their entire history. Everyone from NBA legend Dwyane Wade to former president Barack Obama is celebrating the Aces sweeping the Phoenix Mercury by a 4-0 record, thereby becoming the first WNBA team to do so. With the Aces being on Cloud 9, there was no better time than now to do some trolling.

The official X account of the Las Vegas Aces recently retweeted a post from the Phoenix Mercury dated April 2020. It was the same time period when people began taking precautions at an exponential rate following the spread of COVID-19. The Phoenix Mercury used this as an opportunity to joke. They put out a picture in a tweet that showed the WNBA championship trophy on one side, and the logos of 6 teams, including that of the Aces, on the other side. A line divided them. Below that line was written “Social Distancing”.

Well, 5 years later, the Las Vegas Aces were in their best position to make a comeback statement. After all, they boasted 3 championship titles, had defeated the Phoenix Mercury themselves, and defeated them in 4 games in a row, aka a clean sweep, to secure the title. Therefore, after retweeting the April 2020 post, the Aces wrote “On Planet Aces, we’ve won 🏆🏆🏆 since you posted this 🙃”.

When the ‘Social Distancing’ tweet was put out, the Phoenix Mercury had 3 championship titles under their name, while the Aces had none. Even the presence of someone like A’ja Wilson couldn’t give them an edge. However, things changed once Becky Hammon came along. Having earlier worked for Gregg Popovich’s San Antonio Spurs, the head coach brought in an abundance of NBA experience that she felt could be utilized in the WNBA.

Hammon reportedly found ways to connect with each player and different ways for them to stay focused. Additionally, she scrapped former coach Bill Laimbeer’s methodical, post-heavy system for a modern pace-and-space operation, and had Wilson play center on defense for the first time in her pro career. The result of those changes, and that partnership, is there for all to see.

Oscar Wilde once said, “Don’t feed the trolls; nothing fuels them so much”. Then again, when the opportunity presents itself, it is just too hard to ignore. Therefore, if securing the championship title in itself wasn’t enough, then the Aces’ trolling won over some other netizens, too.

WNBA Fans Praise The Comeback Tweet From A’ja Wilson And Co

One social media user wrote, “Admin had 1 for the road to close the season like they been waiting like forever to “press send” that one from the draft 🤣🤣🤣”. Well, it’s true when they say that “The bullies never remember but the bullied never forget”. From the looks of it, the Phoenix Mercury won’t forget it for a long time.

One individual wrote, “That was 5 years ago!! Just SWEEP it under the rug!! 😏🧹🧹🧹🧹#RaisetheStakes #WNBAFinals”. Surprisingly, the first time the WNBA held a ‘Best of 7’ series that it ended with a 4-0 record. Going into the WNBA Finals, the Phoenix Mercury were determined. Especially Alyssa Thomas, who had been quite open about seeking redemption after the Aces had defeated her and the Connecticut Sun squad during the 2022 Finals. However, 3 consecutive losses, and with Satou Sabally getting declared ‘OUT’ after sustaining a concussion, that determination took a hit.

One social media user wrote, “Admin searching posts from the COVID era. The hate is real 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭”. Either the admin has been the same, or the old admin would have hit the new one up to give him an idea on how to elevate the Aces’ win even further.

One individual wrote, “No matter how long it takes to get an opp back 🥴😮‍💨”.

It certainly took them less time than if others had also set out to do so. After all, winning 3 championships within a period of 4 years is unheard of in modern-day basketball. Plus, the trolling wouldn’t have been as good if A’ja Wilson and co didn’t have to defeat the same team that initially trolled them to be on a pedestal.

One social media user wrote, “It actually get so much worse. Since postin this, 5 of the 6 champions are teams on this list (Aces x3, Sky, & Liberty). 2 of them (Sky ’21 & Aces ’25) were won against the Mercury, wit the Mercury goin 1-7 in those 2 finals appearances.” Well, in light of this, the other teams have to just go online and write up their own responses.

Overall, the majority of reactions saw fans being united in giving out their praise to the Las Vegas Aces over their trolling. From the looks of it, the Phoenix Mercury got defeated twice, since there wasn’t a response to the Aces’ tweet. Then again, with the off-season now in full swing, the Mercury’s admin has ample time to respond.
