With the kind of injury-hit season the Indiana Fever have had, they’ve had to embrace the ‘next player up’ philosophy to stay afloat. After missing so many players, especially at the guard position, the Fever have had to reimagine their backcourt plenty of times. However, one player who has remained consistently available is Lexie Hull. Till now, she has appeared in all ‌38(24 starts) games Indiana has played thus far and is having her career-best year. However, after the collision against Seattle’s Gabby Williams, fans held their breath as she was heading to the locker room.

However, two minutes into the second quarter, she returned to the game. Despite clear signs of discomfort and pain, she showed incredible toughness by grabbing the joint-highest rebounds (9) and was a team best, +31 on the court. By the time the game was over and Indiana had won a crucial game, Lexie Hull had black eyes. With the fans concerned about Lexie’s well-being and whether there is any risk of her being put in the league’s concussion protocol, her mother took to social media to respond to the question.

Replying to a fan’s X post, Lexie’s mother, Jamie Hull, said, “She’s fine. Turned into a couple black eyes, but she okay thankfully! 🥰

The incident happened with 7:05 left in the first quarter. As Lexie Hull and Gabby Williams both dove to save a loose ball, their heads collided and both players went back to the locker room. Though Gabby was able to come back to the game a few minutes later, Lexie Hull’s comeback had to wait until the second quarter. Although Indiana was already leading comfortably at that point, Lexie’s comeback lifted the team to hand Seattle a blowout win, instead of just hanging on.

In fact, Hull’s toughness drew praise not only from her coach but also from Fever fans online, who circulated clips of her playing through visible swelling. On Reddit’s r/wnba, users called her “the definition of grit,” while X posts compared her effort to vintage Fever performances from Tamika Catchings. That kind of organic fan reaction has further solidified her reputation as a culture-setter for this rebuilding Indiana side.

After the game, Stephanie White said, “It’s just who she is. She’s just a tough young woman who battles every possession.” In this crucial run of games, which can make or break the Indiana Fever’s season, this kind of fight and grit is exactly what they need if they are to navigate through this tough stretch of games. After losing surprisingly against the Washington Mystics and the Dallas Wings, the Fever missed out on catching up to the New York Liberty for the 5th spot. From now till the end of the season, they would hope to at least lock up the 6th seed till the time Caitlin Clark is back in action.

Indiana Fever Faces Its ‘Kryptonite’ as Caitlin Clark Starts to Ramp Up

At one point after the All-Star break, it seemed like the Indiana Fever had unlocked something new. After losing Caitlin Clark to yet another injury and consecutive losses against the New York Liberty, many believed that this season was done. However, what transpired was just out of storybooks. The Fever went on a franchise record run and won 5 consecutive games. After this run, they were sitting in the 5th spot of the league standings.

As the Phoenix Mercury were out of form, many even expected the Indiana Fever to jump them in the standings and get home-court advantage. However, in a single game against the Phoenix Mercury, the whole momentum was reversed. Since then, they are just 3-4 and are hanging onto a playoff spot. Their next matchup in their pursuit of a playoff spot is against their Kryptonite this season, the Los Angeles Sparks.

In their previous three meetings this season, the Sparks have won them all. They even managed to beat the Indiana Fever when they were struggling massively and sitting near the bottom of the table. Now, with Caitlin Clark starting to ramp up her recovery, it is imperative that Fever break this run of losses against the Spark and get some room for comfort in the 6th spot.

Although CC has started to participate in shootarounds, head coach Stephanie White wants to wait and give the star guard some more reps before she makes her return to the court. When asked about Caitlin Clark, she said, “I want to see her in practice. Live in practice, I want to see her continue to work to not just build endurance, but to be able to handle contact 94 feet as it’s going to be in-game.

While it is encouraging that Caitlin is progressing, there are still some ways to go in her return to action. In the meantime, the Fever needs to keep doing what they did against the Storm and win as many of their remaining games as they can.
