Caitlin Clark’s back injury forced her to miss three games in July, and she has played limited minutes in the games she appeared in so far. However, NBA player Draymond Green shared that he thinks that even on a per-game basis, Clark has struggled with her 3-point attempts and success. However, this isn’t the story of just this month, as Clark’s 3-point stats don’t look great even when you zoom out to consider the whole season so far.
“It’s been a tough month from three for Caitlin Clark. She’s just 3-for-19 from beyond the arc in July,” Yahoo Sports’ X handle wrote in the caption of the post that read she is shooting 15.8% from the three-point line in July.
Following the reveal, Draymond took to Threads to post, “Why has Caitlin only attempted 19 3s this month? Shouldn’t she be at least 25 attempts through 5 games this month? That would be 5 attempts per… Which is still low for great shooters today.”
On the league-wide leaderboard, Clark ranks 36th among 43 players, averaging 32.0% from 3-point range. A’ja Wilson leads the league with 46.8. Thankfully for Clark, things get significantly better when looking at the 3-pointers made list.
While Wilson still leads the league with 6.4, Clark is ninth with 4.7. One of the reasons for the especially low numbers so far in July could be attributed to the limited minutes.
Clark was injured against Phoenix on June 24 and missed four games. She returned against LA on July 8. In the game, she played only 16 minutes, converting only 1 of 6 from the three-point line. She did not feature in the next game against the Mercury. Against the Aces, she converted only 1 of 5 from the three-point line and played 24 minutes. This was followed by another subpar outing against the Valkyries in which she converted only 1 of 8 from the three-point line.
Comparing Clark’s 3-point performance is difficult; she played only 13 games last season before a season-ending injury. However, her 34.4% 3-point percentage from 2024 is still better than what she’s averaging right now.
Granted, Indiana is not short of scoring options, with Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston compensating for the offensive burden in Clark’s absence. Clark’s explosiveness and ability to draw opponents and stretch their defense are where she truly shines.
She is also averaging an impressive 19.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 7.7 assists per game. However, her already poor 3-pointer stats have nosedived since her return on July 8, and the comparison with her 2024 stats shows that she hasn’t really made progress, at least in this aspect of her game.
The weeks following the All-Star game on July 25 will see Indiana facing some of the top contender teams like the Minnesota Lynx, Las Vegas Aces, and the New York Liberty. This stretch could define Indiana’s season, and Clark must improve her 3-point shooting for the matchups ahead.
