The 2025 WNBA season has been full of broken records and first-evers for A’ja Wilson. Leading the Las Vegas Aces to an incredible turnaround, she was named the league’s first-ever four-time MVP. But the saga of breaking records didn’t stop there. She carried her form into the postseason and broke numerous records while leading the Aces to yet another championship. Game 3 of the finals was no different. She broke multiple records, such as the most 30-point games in the playoffs. But there was another record that she set that has invited a reaction from former NBA Champion Matt Barnes.

With mere seconds left on the clock, both teams were tied at 88. But Wilson found herself in isolation with DeWanna Bonner, and she calmly drained a step-back jumper over her with just 0.3 seconds left in the game. This ended any hopes that the Phoenix Mercury had to make the series interesting. Interestingly, a detail about her shot was ignored at the time. Not only did she score over DeWanna Bonner, but Alyssa Thomas had also arrived at the scene for help with the defense. This made A’ja Wilson the first player to make a game-winner over a married couple.

Reacting to the post, Matt Barnes had an interesting reaction. He commented on the post, “Caption is wild.” And indeed, it was a very odd record to have broken, but it is a record nonetheless. With the way A’ja Wilson kept breaking records throughout the playoffs, it is no surprise that she broke this odd record. Matt Barnes has long been a big fan of A’ja Wilson. When she appeared on Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson’s All The Smoke podcast last year, he had praised her, both for her game and her personality.

Barnes had said, “I’ve always been a fan of your game, but I think your energy and spirit are just as amazing as your game and and like you said, you pride yourself on not only being a great basketball player but a great person, and I think you’re you’re doing a great job at accomplishing that.”

While this record was certainly not on anyone’s bingo cards, there were plenty of records that A’ja Wilson shattered this postseason. As she led the Las Vegas Aces to the franchise’s third championship, A’ja had yet another record-setting performance in Game 4.

A’ja Wilson clinches her second Finals MVP in another record-breaking night

As the Las Vegas Aces halted the Phoenix Mercury’s fourth-quarter surge and closed in on another championship, there were no doubts about who the MVP would be. A’ja Wilson had already cemented her credentials for the award. But her Game 4 performance left no doubts for anyone (if there were any). She finished the game with a 31-point and 9-rebound near double-double. On her way to that, she broke multiple records.

She became the WNBA player with the most points scored in a single postseason (322 points). She also set the league record for most points scored in a finals series with 114. Considering this total came in just 4 games, it shows how dominant the series was for her. But she didn’t just dominate the finals with her scoring. Her defense was equally important and dominant. She broke the record for most steals (23) and blocks (26) in a single postseason.

A’ja also became the first ever player, both in the NBA and WNBA, to win the scoring title, MVP, Defensive Player of the Year (shared with Alyssa Thomas), and Finals MVP in a single season. With a record-breaking off-season such as this, it is no surprise that A’ja Wilson was named the Finals MVP. Now that the season is officially over, it is time for the Las Vegas Aces to enjoy the victory parade.
