If you were to judge A’ja Wilson some three years ago, she was fighting against all odds to lead the Aces to the 2021 championship. But just one block from Brittney Griner was enough to shatter that dream. Ever since, she’s turned the tables, becoming a two-time WNBA champion and a three-time MVP. And now, with an impressive season having 807 points to her name and still 6 games to go, she’s chasing a fourth title with another championship trophy. The question is, is it that easy? The internet is divided.
If it’s Becky Hammon answering, it’s undoubtedly the Aces’ captain. And there’s a reason—dominance. The Aces’ standout puts it on display every game, whether it’s her 36-point, 13-rebound outing against the Washington Mystics or her recent 18 points and nine rebounds against the Sky. She’s nailing it. So, when asked about Wilson’s chances of winning the title this season, Hammon didn’t need a second to think, replying in a postgame press conference: “I mean, she’s number one in total points, number one in total rebounds. I mean, she’s top in every category possible.”
And you don’t need more proof. She’s averaging 23.1 points this season, more than her career average, along with 10 rebounds. She’s leading the league in blocks (2.2) and second only to Angel Reese in Rebounds (10.1). But that’s not all. Wilson also stacked up a streak of 19 double-doubles, helping the Aces record the league’s longest winning streak this season at 11 straight. But if you’ve watched her closely, that wasn’t the case earlier in the season. But if someone who is closest or even surpasses for a moment, it is Napheesa Collier from the Minnesota Lynx. She has the best points per game (23.9) and a +12.2 rating, making the choice even harder.

But Hammon put it best: “And it’s a little irritating with the narrative, you know, you got to come into this open-minded every season if you’re a voter,” she added in the same press conference. When the regular season began, Caitlin Clark—who had missed a preseason game with quad soreness—was still predicted by some to contend for MVP. She even received 6% of the votes in preseason polls by WNBA GMs. But the Fever sensation ended up being limited to just 13 games, missing nearly one-third of Indiana’s season. Now it is Collier in the picture. But can Wilson follow up with her fourth MVP, or will Napheesa extend the gap to take it home this time?

Fans have already picked their favs for MVP!
While Wilson’s fourth MVP might not rhyme as nicely as her third, she’s still in the hunt even though it won’t be easy. A fan commented, “We’re not doing A’ja da MVP after every Aces win. The MVP is still Phee. Argue with your fat a– mamma.” Napheesa Collier has been leading the favorites even before the season started, as she drew nearly 67% of GM votes against Wilson’s 25%, making a clear distinction.
“It’s her season,” penned another user. And rightfully so. While Cheryl Reeve felt “that sh-t was stolen” last year by the NY Liberty, her captain’s ensuring it ain’t the case this season. So, the Lynx are at the top with a 30-7 record while having five games left to play. And that was enough to get them the first playoff berth this season because it is Collier who is leading the Minnesota Lynx.

“Anybody saying this is not close can’t be trusted. Anybody saying Phee wasn’t the obvious choice pre-injury can’t be trusted. Anybody saying AT or Allisha Gray is the MVP at this point in time can’t be trusted. Plenty of games left, but it’s Phee vs. A’ja with Phee in the lead,” penned another user. Averaging a league-high 23.9 points per game, she edges A’ja Wilson in scoring. She’s also been consistent, ranking second in steals (1.8) and fourth in blocks (1.6).

She doesn’t even need to campaign, as legends like Lisa Leslie have already been praising her. “Listen, she’s back. That’s what I gotta tell you, because Queen Phee took the floor. She had two quick turnovers, a little rusty when she started out, but she got it together later,” Leslie said recently on We Need to Talk.

But even fans can’t pick their favs. “As much as I want A’ja to win her 4th MVP, I have to give it to Phee since she has been more consistent from the start of the season,” penned another user. Phee had been consistent, but the league can shift in just a few games. Wilson is winning in a row, but Collier and Co. faced back-to-back defeats, one against New York and then Atlanta.
“Nah, Naphessa got A’ja, who is her closest competition, plus the Lynx have the best record in the W by 6 games with 7 games to go. And Naphessa leads the league in scoring,” wrote another user. The race is heating up, and it is still close. A lot will depend on who comes on top as A’ja Wilson’s Las Vegas Aces face the Minnesota Lynx right after they clash with the second-seeded Atlanta Dream.
