“I may not see million-dollar contracts in my basketball lifetime, but I want the players coming after me to have that opportunity.” Striving to leave the game better than she found it, Napheesa Collier is undoubtedly one of the most influential athletes in the WNBA. While we could wax lyrical about Napheesa’s accolades in the WNBA, it was the birth of Unrivaled that earned her a spot on the TIME100 list of the hundred most influential people.

Having created an alternative for the players that not only keeps them from going overseas but also provides higher salaries, Napheesa is changing the game. And as the world takes notice of women’s basketball, Collier continues to multiply her wealth.

Unrivaled:

In July 2023, Collier announced she and Breanna Stewart were forming a new professional women’s league, Unrivaled, to give WNBA players an option to play in the W’s off season. This also presented an alternative to playing overseas while earning unprecedented amounts.

Unrivaled paid each of its 36 players a guaranteed $250,000 salary for the eight-week season, along with $50,000 for each member of the winning team. The league claims to be offering the highest average salary of any women’s sports league, while players also receive equity stakes as part-owners in the league, which makes it a compelling venture both financially and professionally.
