What’s your perspective on:

Angel Reese's rise: Is she the future face of the league or just another fleeting star?

Have an interesting take?

Angel Reese’s journey is playing out like a Netflix original, and her time with Unrivaled might have just been the pilot episode that set the whole series in motion. When she got everything she needed, “from massages to cold tubs, to being able to have resources, to workouts and everything,” you just know she was not slowing down. But when she said Unrivaled gave athletes the “exposure we deserve,” she wasn’t just talking about the pretty perks it had to offer. It’s not just the beauty treatments and upgraded gyms that Unrivaled brought to the table. And it showed in Sky’s 11 July matchup vs. the Lynx.

Angel Reese and her squad managed to beat the league-leading Lynx, which is led by Unrivaled’s co-founder, Napheesa Collier, by 6 points. And this wasn’t just a plain win. Angel Reese dropped her eighth straight double-double, and her 14th of the season. Postgame, she didn’t hesitate to tip her hat to the founding duo. “Yeah, she’s one of the best,” Reese said of Collier in the postgame presser. “I love playing with the best players, and you see how you match up with the best. She (Napheesa Collier) worked with me all offseason, her and Alex.” Angel Reese added, “Kudos to them because they helped me a lot … being able to go down to Unrivaled and have them in my corner still to this day. Alex texts me all the time.”

In response to her statement, Alex Bazzell, Phee’s husband and Co-founder with her, took it to X and reposted the clip. He dubbed it with, “A superstar and only getting better! @Reese10Angel.” And it couldn’t have been more accurate, especially after Angel Reese became Unrivaled’s first-ever Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY). It was after she received the “most combined weighted votes from Unrivaled players and coaches, as well as a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters,” according to a press release from Unrivaled. But if you thought it ended there, you’d be far from correct, as the Sky was just bracing up to face the Lynx again, and before their next game, Napheesa Collier broke the silence, too.

Collier said, “That’s how players leave better than they came. Angel is a part of the future of the league… she has a long career ahead of her. The way that she’s developed has been really fun.” Safe to say that Mama Phee is doing what she does best, and tonight’s matchup vs the Lynx is a great mentor-mentee showdown. Moreover, either way, it’s a win for Phee because if the Sky wins, Unrivaled does too. To add to that, Angel Reese’s latest performances are only giving greater confidence to Napheesa Collier, who’s eyeing an All-Star win soon, as the opposing captain to Caitlin Clark.

She picked Reese as the fifth overall reserve pick. With that, Angel Reese became a 2 time WNBA All-Star in just her second pro-season of her career. Although she did not get a spot on the starting roster, even after receiving the fifth-highest fan votes amongst all the frontcourt players. But that didn’t affect her excitement in any manner; she still reps for team Napheesa as hard. It showed when she took it to X and wrote, “nah team PHEE is STACKEDDD.” She even said, Just happy to be with Phee. Obviously, she’s a great player. She deserves to be a captain this year… But I’m excited to play with great talent. We play defense. It’s gonna be super competitive.”

The competition is going to be tough indeed. Soon, it’s time for Angel Reese to replicate her double-double (12 pts., 11 reb.) performance that helped her team win 117-109 over Team USA. And at the pace she’s been going (both on and off the court), it’s likely that she’ll emerge as a winner, no matter which squad ends up taking the trophy home.

Just days before the WNBA All-Star Game, Angel Reese landed a major milestone. She became the newest cover athlete for NBA 2K26. Not Caitlin Clark or anyone else. It was Reese who joined an elite group of WNBA legends like Candace Parker, Diana Taurasi, Sue Bird, Sabrina Ionescu, and A’ja Wilson. These are the only women from the WNBA who have graced the cover of the iconic basketball video game.

And now it’s Angel Reese who will be sharing the spotlight with NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. She has truly solidified her status as the league’s next crossover superstar. “I’m so blessed to be honored with these two,” Reese said. “I was just super excited. Just trying to be the first of many, and have many young kids and young women look up to me and know that they can do the same things I’m doing.”

But that wasn’t all. She also used the cover moment to unveil her first signature sneaker. It is the Angel Reese 1 by Reebok, in her signature “Diamond Dust” colorway. “Of course, we do everything BIG. Why not debut my signature shoe on the cover of NBA 2K?!?” she posted. The shoe had been in the works since Reebok signed Angel Reese to a multi-year extension back in 2024. “Being on the cover of NBA 2K26 and debuting my first-ever signature shoe… is more than a milestone; it’s a statement,” she added. So who cares about the wins or losses? Angel Reese is already having a blockbuster summer.
