The impact Caitlin Clark has made on the sport of basketball is so much so that even a debate about the NBA’s future somehow circled back to her.

The NBA has always had a face of the league. From Michael Jordan to LeBron James, there has been a superstar who defined the era and carried the spotlight. But now, as the league shifts into a new phase, that singular, undisputed face doesn’t feel as obvious as it once did.
So during a recent episode of What’s Wright?, sports analyst Nick Wright made a bold declaration that quickly sparked online pushback. According to Wright, after NBA legends like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, & Kevin Durant, the most famous basketball player right now isn’t an NBA All-Star at all, it’s Clark.
“The single most famous basketball player under the age of 35 years old is Caitlin Clark. The three most famous basketball players right now are 41-year-old LeBron James, and then 37-38-year-old Steph, and KD. Anthony Edwards, Luka, Jokic, and Giannis, those guys have not ascended to that level, and that is the major issue facing the league that they don’t right now have solve to, and they’re hoping Wemby will solve it.”

Now, whether fans agree with the sports podcaster or not, his argument leaned on something measurable: the Caitlin Clark effect.
During her final two seasons at Iowa, Clark shattered viewership records, with the 2024 national championship game drawing 18.9 million viewers. That game became the most-watched women’s college basketball game ever, and the first time the women’s title game outdrew the men’s.
And once she entered the WNBA, that momentum only grew.
Caitlin Clark’s regular-season debut quickly became the most-watched WNBA game since 2002. If that’s not enough, as per reports, multiple franchises had to move their games to larger arenas when hosting her team to accommodate demand.
With her as the face of their team, the Indiana Fever set a single-season home attendance record with over 340,000 fans. Because of her fandom, the economic ripple effects were just as significant.
Many analysts credited Clark with driving tens of millions in local economic activity, record merchandise sales, and a substantial bump in league valuation. Her Fever jersey sold out within an hour on draft night.
So while Wright’s statement sounded provocative, the numbers behind Clark’s cultural footprint are difficult to ignore. Still, equating popularity with NBA star power is where fans drew the line.
Caitlin Clark’s Growing Fame Just Changed the Conversation
As soon as his comments went viral, many fans argued that Clark’s recent surge in attention doesn’t outweigh the global brand power of players like Luka Dončić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, or Nikola Jokić.
One fan questioning his claim wrote, “Clark over Luka, worldwide? You sure about that?” While another added, “This is a lie. Anthony Edwards and Wembanyama are way more popular than Caitlin Clark.”
But the answer to this debate isn’t that simple. Players like Luka, Giannis, and Jokić have built their reputations through on-court excellence and international success. So their resumes speak for themselves. However, Wright’s argument centered more on visibility, like who is breaking into mainstream conversations, driving record viewership, and generating headlines beyond traditional NBA circles right now.

Furthermore, one fan added, “You’re telling me Luka and Ant are not as famous as Caitlin Clark? This is just false.” Whereas another wrote, “Globally, this just isn’t true.”
In today’s sports landscape, stardom can be measured in multiple ways. Be it through social media reach, endorsement portfolios, international recognition, television ratings, ticket demand, or simple name recognition among casual fans. So, depending on which metric is prioritized, the answer to “who is bigger?” could shift dramatically.
One fan wrote, “Nick, you trippin bruh.”
Whether you agree or disagree with Wright, the reaction has proved one thing: Caitlin Clark’s name now carries enough weight to disrupt an NBA debate. And that alone speaks volumes.
