Caitlin Clark’s first FIBA World Cup appearance already had all the makings of a historic night. She finished as Team USA’s joint-top scorer despite coming off the bench, but the celebration didn’t stop when the game was over. Nike made sure Clark’s first major international moment got an equally big celebration off the court.

Nike took the time to set up a major Clark-themed event in Berlin to celebrate the launch of Clark’s new Caitlin 1 shoe, making her the latest WNBA athlete to receive a signature sneaker. A video on X by @CClarkReport showcased an inside view of the festivities, which had much to offer for guests.

The event, which took place the day after Team USA’s win against China on September 4, was called the “Caitlin 1 Tournament” and was hosted at Alte Munze in Berlin, turning the launch of Clark’s shoe into a wider basketball showcase.

The highlight of the event was a 16-player 1v1 tournament on an indoor court, with a fully functioning wide-screen serving as a scoreboard. There were two divisions, one featuring eight men and the other featuring eight women. The winner was given €1,000.

Apart from the tournament, guests were also given the chance to get a close-up look at the Caitlin 1, along with friendship bracelets, a stocked juice bar, a dunk show, as well as plant customization. It also featured Berlin-based DJ Hanaby on the music.

The event followed an outstanding day for Clark at the World Cup. In her first game, the guard delivered a team-high 14 points and 11 assists in Team USA’s 94-61 demolition of China. Importantly, Clark’s 11 assists marked the first time an American player had recorded double-digit assists in 28 years. The last to do it was Dawn Staley, who finished with 12 against Russia in 1998.

What made this even more impressive was the fact that Clark recorded zero turnovers, showcasing her elite playmaking ability even while logging 25 minutes.

Clark ended up being named TCL Player of the Game, but when speaking to reporters, she gave the credit for her assist totals to her talented teammates.

“Being surrounded by five people who have won gold medals before at the highest level, I try to follow their lead and take every bit of wisdom they try to give me,” Clark said, per FIBA.

“Playing around so many talented players… anybody I pass the ball to, it feels like they are never gonna miss a shot… That’s one of my goals when I come to a game; facilitate and play fast, set up my teammates, get in the paint and get some penetration, especially with their zone, that was one of my focus points coming into the game.”

Even Angel Reese became a part of the historic night. Clark’s 10th assist was a one-handed pass slung to her longtime rival, who finished at the basket through contact. Reese finished with a team-high nine rebounds along with five assists, and the pair looked completely in tune, even sharing a wholesome moment on the sideline.

In addition to the massive event Nike held to celebrate Clark’s shoe, the company also prepared two special colorways for the star guard beforehand. On August 31, Clark posted two Instagram stories showcasing special red-and-white Player Exclusive colorways for the World Cup. The shoes are designed to go along with the red and white Team USA jerseys, and are not expected to see a retail release.

With Clark’s historic debut and Nike’s Berlin showcase in the rearview mirror, Team USA now has its attention on its next challenge.

A Familiar Foe Awaits Team USA in Their Next Game.

After opening their title defense with every player on the team scoring and three of them finishing tied for a team-high 14 points, Kara Lawson’s side have all the momentum heading into their next game. However, their next opposition also enters the matchup on the back of a win.

The Americans will face Italy in their second group-stage game, with the Italians riding the momentum of a big 63-54 win over the Czech Republic. One player Team USA will have to keep a close eye on is Cecilia Zandalasini, who has been enjoying a breakout season of her own with the Valkyries.

“Obviously, Zandalasini’s had an incredible year with the Valkyries. And, you know, Coach Nat, who’s on our staff, has been able to coach her and really get the best out of her,” Clark said in the press conference. “And you know, I think she’s an incredible player.”

“It seems like every game she continues to get better and better. She can stretch the floor. She can score in the mid-range. She has great size. She’s athletic,” Clark continued. “So, you know, she’ll be one of the keys to our scouting report, I’m sure. But she’s certainly had a tremendous year, and I would expect her to do the same for Italy as well.”

Zandalasini is averaging 8.8 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game for the Valkyries this season. She also added 19 points in Italy’s win over the Czech Republic, so it’s easy to see why Caitlin Clark has already singled her out.

The good thing for Team USA is that they already know what Italy can bring to the table. The two sides met earlier this year at the World Cup qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico, where the Americans cruised to a 93-59 win on March 14. Kahleah Copper led the way with a game-high 15 points, while four other Americans also finished in double figures, giving Team USA plenty of reason to feel confident heading into the rematch.

For Italy, there is at least a safety net should they suffer an expected heavy defeat here. Their group-stage fate will be determined by the other results, particularly their showdown with China on Monday. But that shouldn’t stop them from bringing their A-game and making things as difficult as possible for Caitlin Clark and Co.
