19 Years After Unfolding WNBA’s Big-time Legacy, 4x Champion Sue Bird Relishes Nostalgia

Guts, glory, and magic- that is what the WNBA champions are made of. Ever since its inception in 1997, there have been three teams to have bagged the Championship title the highest number of times (four). They are the Houston Comets, the Minnesota Lynx, and the Seattle Storm. And it was the Seattle Storms’s Sue Bird that relived the nostalgia lately.

But what could be the nostalgia about? And how did Bird relive it.

What did Sue Bird do?

The Seattle Storms former point guard Sue Bird shared a story on Instagram that marked the 19th anniversary of her team bagging their first of four WNBA Championship titles in 2004. The post was a group picture shared by Bird on her story on Friday that had her entire team holding the silverware. The post had been originally shared by the Seattle Storm on their official Instagram account.

For the unversed, Sue Bird is an NBA legend who plied her trade as a point guard for the Seattle Storm. Leading the Storms to four WNBA championship titles, Bird is the only player to have won championships across 3 decades.

The New York-born was drafted in the first draft by the Storms in 2002 and continued to represent them throughout her career. Famous for her smooth passes, Bird is the leading player in terms of assists (3,234) in the WNBA. The 42-year-old was also named the USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year in 2021.

As for the 2004 WNBA championship, the Storms finished second in the Western Conference behind the Los Angeles Sparks. They then clean swept the Minnesota Lynx and went on to barrage the previous year’s conference finalists – the Sacramento Monarchs 2-1 in a best of three Conference Finals.

Later, the Storm stars’ Lauren Jackson and Sue Bird propelled the team to bag the coveted Championship title by upending the Connecticut Suns by a margin of 2-1. Bird scored a remarkable 10 points during the second game while having the highest assists (4,6) for the Storms during Game 1 and 3 respectively.

Following her dazzling performance, the Storm’s star Betty Lennox was named the WNBA Finals MVP for scoring a total 67 points in all three Games combined.

Meanwhile, as for the current Championship finals, the Las Vegas Aces have taken a lead of 2-0 against the New York Liberty. The third of the best of five matches will be played on 16th October at the Brooklyn Centre.
