“I think we’re playing together, and once we play together, nobody can stop us,” she said via WNBA on ION. “Reach our goals. Our goal is to make it to the playoffs and hopefully win a Championship. So, if we keep playing Chicago Sky basketball and play together, then we’re going to get there.”

Chicago came into this Portland stretch at the back of a six-game losing streak. The team was struggling, as the roster overhaul wasn’t bringing results. However, two back-to-back blowout wins have brought new hope, especially Friday’s 124-94 win, which carried an even bigger margin than Thursday’s 101-78 win.

Kamilla Cardoso was the team’s offensive anchor on the night. The third-year pro led the game with 30 points while scoring a perfect 13 of 13 from the field and set the WNBA record for most field goals in a single game without a miss.

The Chicago Sky center broke the previous record held by LA Sparks veteran Nneka Ogwumike, who recorded 12 of 12 back in 2016.

“I think the coaches have emphasized on me rolling first and just holding my seal,” Cardoso said when asked about her performance in the post-game presser. “I think that’s something I have been doing, and it worked really well.”

Behind Cardoso, Chicago’s entire performance sharpened. Every ball movement was executed efficiently, and every shot they took achieved the desired result. The Sky recorded a stellar 38 assists in the game, led by Skylar Diggins’ team-high nine. Led by Cardoso’s eight rebounds, Chicago also outrebounded Portland 32-24 in the game.

In addition, Chicago had a better scoring night, shooting 66% from the field and 54% from beyond the arc. These numbers echo the team’s prowess when they come together and contribute in a game. But that instance hasn’t been a consistent pattern for the Chicago Sky.

While navigating their season with injuries to crucial players like Rickea Jackson, the Chicago Sky have found themselves well down the offensive pecking order. The Sky are currently 9th in the league in points per game, averaging 85.7.

It’s a caveat that neither Kamilla Cardoso nor a veteran like Skylar Diggins can sort out single-handedly. However, for now, Cardoso is deserving of the spotlight.

Tyler Marsh Gives Kamilla Cardoso Her Props After Historic WNBA Night

Despite the Chicago Sky’s disappointing season, Kamilla Cardoso has been one of the franchise’s silver linings. Her performance has just gone from strength to strength this season. Just a few games back, Cardoso dropped a season-high 26 points in a loss against the Dallas Wings. And now she has just improved that performance against Portland.

Speaking in the post-game presser, Chicago Sky head coach Tyler Marsh was quick to pinpoint Cardoso’s growth this season.

“It’s been a stretch of games now, I think the last four games she’s approached it with that different type of mindset, and it’s been to our benefit,” Marsh said in the post-game presser. “Her love of attention to detail lately, her trust in teammates, her trust in herself, it’s been evident in the last four games.”

In Angel Reese’s absence in the frontcourt, Kamilla Cardoso has handled the reins perfectly. She’s leading the team in rebounds (8.6 per game, as per ESPN). Meanwhile, Cardoso is also averaging over 13 points per game while shooting 55.8% from the field.

Furthermore, her defensive tenacity on the court is excellent. Her physicality in the paint allows her to protect the rim effectively, making her a perfect two-way player. If the Chicago Sky actually want to find themselves anywhere near the conversation of the championships, Cardoso will have to be one of their major cogs this season.

Winning games at a stretch is nowhere near optional for them. Despite their two wins over Portland, they are still in a precarious position. The team stands 6-12 in the season, with their next games scheduled against the Las Vegas Aces in back-to-back games on June 28 and July 3.
