A frustrated coach in Stephanie White; a heated exchange with a superstar in Caitlin Clark that has a camera following her everywhere; and an ugly loss. That’s the ultimate recipe for social media to take turns whipping up fake narratives. Former First Take host Skip Bayless, for one, fell prey to fake reports that White was fired. Sports columnist Jason Whitlock’s extended analysis on the possibility of Caitlin Clark leaving the Fever did little to fend off momentum to the growing, yet false, narratives surrounding the franchise.

“I ride for Steph, I ride for these girls,” Clark clarified in her defense.
“[Clark] wants to be coached. I want her to help me be a better coach,” White clarified in her defense.
If that wasn’t enough already, analyst Terrika Foster-Brasby makes her attempt at putting all possible rumors to rest on Wednesday’s episode of the Yahoo Sports Daily.

“I don’t think that there is anything that anyone should have a cause for concern,” Terrika said. Any talk about Stephanie White losing her job, any of that stuff is just way too far and it’s nonsense,”

Of course, one can reason why these speculations about Stephanie White‘s future exist in the first place. Her Fever team is not playing as well as many would have expected, currently sitting on a 6-5 record. And looming over all of it is the perception of a strained relationship between White and Clark, a narrative that the now-infamous sideline clash during the Portland Fire loss did nothing to discourage. In fact, for those already primed to believe there is a problem, the incident felt like confirmation.

The incident took place when Fever lost 100-84 away game against the Fire on May 31. Clark and White were on courtside having a heated exchange. The coach went on to sub Clark out for Raven Johnson as Kelsey Mitchell and Makayla Timpson seemingly helped Clark to settle down.

For Terrika, however, all of that is simply part of what comes with being the most scrutinized team in the league. “Every little thing that they do is going to be scrutinized. Some of it is warranted, some of it is not. That’s just the nature of sports,” she said.

Will that scrutiny ease anytime soon? Probably not, not with Caitlin Clark at the center of it all. But the speculation around Stephanie White‘s future could quiet considerably if the Fever string together a run of wins. Form has a way of silencing narratives that adversity amplifies.

WNBA Analyst Applauds Fever’s Bounce-Back After Ugly Portland Loss

Of course, the Indiana Fever haven’t won all of their games since that ugly loss to the Portland Fire. That doesn’t mean they haven’t responded well to the situation. While the Fever did suffer a defeat to the New York Liberty during that stretch, Terrika was not particularly concerned by that result. “They lost against New York, but New York is on a five-game win streak. That’s fine,” she said.

In fact, Terrika has chosen to praise the Fever’s response so far, pointing instead to the other two games they won against the Atlanta Dream and the Washington Mystics. “They came out and smacked Atlanta in the mouth right after that. They held Atlanta to like 71 points. Again, you continue, you come out and you win a gamewinner against Washington in Washington,” she said.

The way Terrika sees it, the Fever have responded exactly the way they needed to. They ignored the outside noise and went out and won basketball games.

They play the Chicago Sky next, and hopefully they can pull off another win to continue that momentum. That would do a great deal to further quieten the tension that surrounds this Fever team right now.
