The New York Liberty’s Saturday night loss to the Indiana Fever came with an even bigger concern than the final score. The game ended with what appeared to be a serious injury to one of the team’s crucial pieces, Marine Johannès, as she had to be assisted off the court after suffering an apparent non-contact injury.

As shared by Jackie Powell on X, Marine Johannès suffered a non-contact injury during the game. And following the incident, teammates Betnijah Laney-Hamilton and Jonquel Jones helped her off the court as she exited the game.
The said injury occurred during the fourth quarter with the Liberty trying to keep pace with the Fever after falling behind. Johannès was running alongside Indiana guard Tyasha Harris as Harris dribbled toward the arc. However, as Johannès appeared to make an attempt to swat the ball away from Harris, she suddenly pulled up and immediately showed signs of distress, appearing to have pulled or twisted something without Harris or any player making physical contact with her.
To complete that play, Harris completed her drive through two Liberty defenders. And then she made a pass to Myisha Hines-Allen, who quickly found Caitlin Clark for a made three-pointer. Meanwhile, Marine Johannès went down to the floor and remained there for about a minute, visibly in pain as teammates gathered around her. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton and Jonquel Jones then stepped in to support her, helping her off the court before they took her back to the locker room for evaluation.
Prior to the injury, Johannès had played 18 minutes and contributed 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Sadly, neither her efforts nor the team’s performance as a whole proved enough, as the Liberty still fell to a 108-88 defeat. The loss dropped New York to 13-12 on the season, leaving the team seventh in the overall WNBA standings.
The defeat also marked the Liberty’s fourth consecutive loss of the season. They will next face the Dallas Wings and will be hoping to finally snap that losing streak.
Whether Marine Johannès will be available for that game, however, remains to be seen. But judging by her reaction, the fact that she needed assistance to leave the court, and that the injury was non-contact, the situation appears to be quite serious and concerning.
New York Liberty’s Marine Johannès Sufferered Apparent Left Ankle Injury
According to ESPNW’s broadcast, Marine Johannès appeared to leave the court due to an apparent non-contact injury to her left ankle. And based on the replay of the sequence, that assessment appeared accurate. Johannès seemed to feel immediate pain in her left leg after planting her foot while running alongside Harris.
Of course, Johannès will still undergo further medical evaluation to determine the exact nature of the injury. And according to leagues requirements, the team will update the team’s official injury reports. Ankle injuries can vary greatly in severity. So there is a possibility that it is not serious enough to sideline her for as long as the Liberty might fear.
Marine Johannès has been a crucial stabilizing piece for the New York Liberty throughout the 2026 season, particularly because of the team’s multiple backcourt injuries and roster absences. She has appeared in all 25 games, making a career-high 17 starts. Those increased responsibilities have translated into career-best production. She is averaging 9.4 points, 2.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.
Hopefully, the injury ultimately proves to be a mild one, allowing Marine Johannès to return to the Liberty lineup as soon as possible.
