Returning to the court for the first time since a domestic dispute involving her ex-boyfriend led to his arrest, Rickea Jackson had more than just a game to win; she had a point to prove. Jackson took control of the game and led Breeze to a 77-56 victory over Vinyl, showing everyone why she should be on the court. Paige Bueckers saw Jackson’s performance in person and shared her thoughts on what made the comeback so special.

“Rickea’s ability to respond, and just show up and show out, and be present,” Bueckers said. “Basketball for a lot of us is our safe place, our safe haven. We come here to get into a different place mentally and lock in.” Bueckers emphasized that Jackson’s impact extended across all facets of play. “It didn’t look like she missed a beat. Her impact on both sides of the ball, her versatility, her compete, her fire, what she brings to this team, it’s super meaningful.”

Jackson’s numbers backed Bueckers’ insights up. She scored 22 points on 9-of-18 shooting and added three assists. Jackson made her presence known at the beginning of the game when she made a 3-pointer with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter and followed it up with a pull-up jumper, which demonstrated she maintained her playing rhythm despite her absence from competition.

In the second quarter, she showed off all her skills by driving to the paint with power, finishing layups with confidence, and grabbing important boards. Her aggressive perimeter defense early on showed how she could affect the game on both ends, defending multiple positions and controlling the flow of the game.

The circumstances of Jackson’s return were made more significant by the recent arrest of her former partner, James Pearce Jr., who faces charges of two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated stalking, and fleeing police, according to jail records.

On Saturday, Jackson showed she can be her best self on the basketball court. Bueckers, too, shone with 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as Breeze won to improve to 6-6. With Jackson back in top form, Bueckers has a running mate who can help elevate the team’s performance.

Paige Bueckers chases bigger goals than just winning games

Paige Bueckers is looking ahead to more than just this season or league. The 24-year-old Dallas Wings guard has had to deal with new coaches and challenges. Bueckers didn’t think twice when someone asked her where she saw herself in five years.

“I want to be a winner,” Bueckers declared. “I wanna win WNBA championships. I want to win championships in Unrivaled. I want to become an Olympian. I think that’s the highest level you can represent yourself and represent your country.”
