The Dallas Wings’ 2025 WNBA season has seemed like a similar story: Paige Bueckers having a great game, but that great performance not leading to wins. With last night’s game following a similar suit, Bueckers was the leading scorer, yet the Dallas Wings fell to their 20th loss of the season. Drafting Paige Bueckers and adding a veteran support cast in the off-season brought along lofty expectations for the Dallas faithful. However, it hasn’t quite worked out. The signings have not had the desired effect that the front office expected. With NaLyssa Smith already traded to the Las Vegas Aces, that might not be the only move the Wings make.
The trade deadline for the 2025 WNBA season is fast approaching. With just under a week to go till the deadline for teams to improve their roster before the playoffs. Or, the final chance to call it quits on the season and make the deep plunge into the tanking mode. What the Dallas Wings decide to do remains to be seen. On one hand, they have a dismal record of 8-20, and sit in the 11th position on the league table, and are 6 games behind the 8th seed. However, after so much buildup before the season, should the team just give up?
While the team may be debating how they should proceed with the season, the analysts have also joined in the trend. Analysing the ways all teams should approach the deadline, WNBA insider Jordan Robinson laid out the whole deal regarding the Dallas Wings. Speaking on the Bleacher Reports’ WNBA show, she said, “ You have Paige Bueckers, your All-Star rookie, your player that you’re gonna build this franchise around. She needs help. She needs help. She needs a new coach and she needs help.” Jordan Robinson echoed the thoughts of many Dallas Wings fans who seem to have lost faith in Chris Koclanes.

Coach Koclanes has been under fire for a while now. The fans have long been criticising him for slow starts to games and his indecisiveness in calling late-game timeouts. Another common complaint is his failure to improve Dallas’ defense, something that has been his calling card throughout his career.

She continued her analysis, saying, “ Do you get the help before the season ends. Do you try to trade away the players who have played well all season? Or even a Maddy Siegrist who’s back from injury to try to get draft picks. Because your draft picks this year really worked out for you as far as rookies go. Record-wise? No. But Aziaha James and JJ Quinerly and having amazing years for their rookie season, but, it’s not enough.” She stated that with the current roster, it is very unlikely that they will make the playoffs this year. However, she believes that the Wings can make another move. In fact, she expressed extreme confidence in Dallas GM, Curt Miller in making a move.
Dallas Wings’ GM, Curt Miller, is no stranger to making roster changes. His first major action as a Wings’ GM was to orchestrate one of the biggest trades in WNBA history. Even Jordan Robinson gave Curt his flowers while analysing the Wings’ roster moves. She said, “ For the Dallas Wings, Curt Miller as a GM has not been afraid to shake things up and add different trades in there. He’s already made a ton of moves.”

Curt Miller And His Willingness To Swing Big In Trades
Curt Miller, as a Dallas Wings GM, has never been afraid to pull the trigger. When it comes to improving the roster, whether through trades or the draft, Miller is omnipresent. However, his first move as a GM did not come in the form of a roster change. His first move was to find a new head coach after the Wings parted ways with Latricia Trammell. With Chris Koclanes confirmed as the new coach, Miller went into the business of making roster moves.

Is it time for the Dallas Wings to part ways with Coach Koclanes and find new leadership?
Have an interesting take?
His major move came in part of a blockbuster 4-team trade. The Dallas Wings acquired DiJonai Carrington, Tyasha Harris, and NaLyssa Smith ( later traded ). This move made a lot of noise as it meant that the Wings were preparing to compete from Paige Bueckers’ rookie year. Miller also displayed his panache in acquiring future assets as well. He traded NaLyssa Smith to the Las Vegas Aces in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick. However, injuries played a spoilsport in Curt Miller’s plan.

The Dallas Wings lost Tyasha Harris for the rest of the season very early on into the season. From then on, it has been a constant barrage of injuries. From DiJonai Carrington to Maddy Siegrist to even rookie Paige Bueckers, everybody has had their share of spending time in the infirmary. These inconsistencies due to injuries have made like hard for head coach Chris Koclanes as well.
However, as they say, the buck stops with Curt Miller. The Dallas Wings drafted a generational talent in Paige Bueckers. But with such talent comes an ever greater responsibility to make that talent count for something. Curt Miller has a huge responsibility to build a roster that can maximise Paige’s potential. Will it be this year or next? We’ll find out in just a few days.
