For years now, Breanna Stewart has thrived on the currency of consistency. The New York Liberty veteran might not be the most flashy or charismatic player on the court. But her free-flowing scoring prowess has helped her collect accolades like Infinity Stones. Yet despite that, the clout Stewart has received is far short of that of some of her contemporaries.

The All-Star voting has perfectly reflected how the fans have downplayed Stewart. For instance, after the first round of voting, the Liberty veteran is fourth in the list with just 255,879 votes. Stewart is well behind young players like Paige Bueckers and Aliyah Boston. Five-time WNBA All-Star Angel McCoughtry recently shared her two cents in this regard while speaking at the Just Women’s Sports podcast.
“I don’t think that’s true,” McCoughtry said when asked if Stewie gets overlooked. “I think she gets a lot of commotion. Maybe, like you said, people have gotten used to Stewie, and they may take it for granted a little bit.”
“She had zero first-place votes last year,” she added. “So, that’s not good to know. She should get a couple of votes. It’s Stewie and then the reigning champs, but I do believe we do need to add her to that. She needs to be more talked about in that MVP.”
Stewart has always been a composed customer on the court. She doesn’t have the uncomfortable, loud nature that often puts players in the headlines. Instead, Stewart does most of the talking on the court with her performance.
In her decorated WNBA career so far, Stewart is averaging 20.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. These are unreal numbers, given that she is currently in her 10th season in the league. And to be honest, her impact isn’t just limited to the WNBA. She has also flared her magic during her time at UConn, helping the Huskies win four consecutive NCAA Championships.
Furthermore, a three-time WNBA champion, a two-time finals MVP, and a two-time league MVP perfectly echo Stewart’s caliber as a player. But even then, Stewart has been quietly pushed out of the league’s major award in recent times.

As McCoughtry pointed out, Stewie didn’t get a single first-place vote last season. Her numbers? 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds in the season. Despite this stat line, Stewart couldn’t get a single vote while A’ja Wilson dominated the charts with 51 first-place votes. She was followed by Napheesa Collier, who got 18.
Now, Breanna Stewart’s case doesn’t mean undermining Wilson or Collier’s performance last season or downplaying Bueckers and Boston’s votes in the WNBA All-Star voting. To be honest, they are equally good and formidable.
But given the consistency she shows every season, it’s clear the mainstream media and fans should at least bring Stewart to the conversation for the season-end awards or All-Star voting.
McCoughtry feels that Stewart has been burdened by the pressure of her own consistency. Her numbers have just kind of made a 20+ game a regular occurrence for Stewie. And to be honest, it’s kind of a recurring pattern this season as well.
Breanna Stewart Is Quietly Navigating Another MVP-Caliber Season in 2026
In a star-studded New York Liberty lineup, it’s been Breanna Stewart who is pulling the strings. The veteran forward is averaging 19.9 points and 9.0 rebounds so far, as per WNBA.com. But these numbers don’t reflect the entire story.
It needs to be understood that, despite Liberty’s stacked roster, they were short on depth at the start of the season. Their veteran guard, Sabrina Ionescu, missed a fair amount of games, and so did Satou Sabally. But Stewart didn’t let her team fall below the pecking order.
She stood up in important games during this stretch and anchored her team perfectly. Remember the game against the Indiana Fever a few weeks back when she scored 30 points to lead her team to a win. Furthermore, Stewie is one of the first players in the season to win the Player of the Week award twice.
These achievements perfectly add weight to Breanna Stewart’s impact on the New York Liberty. But even then, we can rarely see any threads on X or analysts raving in the media room about the MVP-caliber season that Stewart is having in 2026.
For context, even rookie Olivia Miles is getting a lot of clout for the MVP awards, while Stewie is hardly getting such hype. Nevertheless, with Stewart firing on all cylinders, the Liberty are in a comfortable position right now, sitting at 11-4 on the season. Stewart and the Liberty face the Washington Mystics up next on June 19 at the Barclays Center.
