Rae Burrell’s collegiate and professional career

Now, this is the fun part. Burrell, as you’d expect, has always been a pure hooper. She was the 43rd best recruit in the country out of highschool and ended up committing to the University of Tennessee. There’s a lot of hardwork required to be a part of the legendary Lady Volunteers program, but we know that the six-foot-two guard never shirks away from effort. She put in the work, coming off the bench for most of her freshman and sophomore years, and when the time came? Burrell took flight.

She averaged 16.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and a steal a game during the 2020-21 season, earning All-SEC Second Team honors, and finally landing on the radars of WNBA scouts. Through her four-year collegiate career, one of which was the COVID season, Rae Burrell ended up averaging 10.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game.

In 2022, Burrell decided not to use her extra year of eligibility, and declared for the WNBA draft. As mentioned earlier, the Los Angeles Sparks drafted her 9th overall, but her journey with the organization hasn’t been easy so far. It took just three games for the basketball gods to hit her with something all athletes dread–a season-ending injury.

It took the big guard some time to work back into the Sparks rotation. She got cut from training camp the following year, but was eventually brought in on a hardship deal, playing 29 games and putting up some solid numbers off the bench. After that? Burrell made sure to grasp the opportunity infront of her with both hands. The six-foot-two guard signed a multi-year deal with the LA Sparks in 2024, and she has been amazing ever since. According to WNBA champion Dearica Hamby, the young guard might even have an All-Star appearance coming up in the next couple of years!

Without a doubt, Rae Burrell’s journey towards WNBA stardom has been tough, but rewarding. She has a very promising career ahead of her, and we can’t wait to see what’s coming next. Stay tuned, because we’re in for a ride!
