The sentiment around Azzi Fudd’s season-best performance changed quickly for something far from the hardwood. Fudd finally proved her mettle as the No. 1 draftee of the season, recording 24 points in a 91-76 win against the New York Liberty at the Barclays Center. But the fans’ attention quickly turned to something she said to WNBA legend Sue Bird about road games of the league after the game, which overshadowed her brilliant performance.

“Nobody warned me about road trips,” Fudd said while speaking with Bird in the NBC post-game broadcast. “They kind of ****. I’m not going to lie. I can’t wait to go home.”

“Just my bed. Just the game, you sleep in the city, the next morning you wake up, you fly, and then you have a short practice and play the next day. The turnaround is like that. You’re not eating your own food. You’ve got to order out, and you are sleeping in a different bed every night,” Fudd said when asked why she didn’t like the away stretch.
In her first season at the WNBA, the feeling isn’t very surprising for Azzi Fudd. The Dallas Wings had to travel to Chicago, Atlanta, and then New York for the last three games. It’s something that she didn’t experience in college. Firstly, in her senior season for UConn, Fudd played 12 away games.
It’s slightly less than teams like St. John’s (13) and DePaul (14). Furthermore, unlike St. John’s, the Huskies didn’t have to travel for three consecutive away games. In fact, over the last four seasons, there has been just one instance in which the Huskies played three back-to-back away games.
It took place during the 2024-25 season when they faced South Carolina, Seton Hall, and Butler. Thus, it adds further weight to Fudd’s sentiment. But the fans aren’t buying into it. And in turn, they didn’t mince their words in assessing what Fudd said to Sue Bird after the game.
Fans School Azzi Fudd for Her Travel Complaints Despite Enjoying a Substantial Salary
“Yikes, these ladies didn’t have the luxuries she has today. Read the room Azzi,” commented a fan.
“What an incredible snowflake. She’s not grateful for an amazingly high salary that she has to complain to vets who had so much less? Who paved the way for her to be the spoiled b*** she is?” questioned another.
Many fans, including this one, felt that Azzi Fudd’s comments weren’t substantial coming from Fudd. The No. 1 draftee is already earning a handsome chunk of $500,000, a historic amount for a rookie. Furthermore, the quality of hotel accommodation and travel has improved significantly around the WNBA in the last few years.

The new CBA has kept league-wide charter travel for players in place. These are some of the benefits that veterans like Bird couldn’t enjoy during their time in the league. So, Fudd complaining about the food and hectic travel sounds ironic in front of Bird, who had to board commercial flights mostly for their on-road games.
“Entitled UCONN b*** – she acts like a child, yet she’s less than a year younger than Clark. The majority of WNBA players are so unlikable. Grow up,” another fan wrote.
“Azzi Fudd sounds ungrateful standing in front of ones that came before her. Stewie(#UColonizer alum) gave Azzi an entire 3qtr when Sabally was subbed to have a breakout game in front of Sue, and she still couldn’t meet the moment in an interview,” chimed in another.
The interview was actually supposed to be a moment that defines UConn’s legacy. Fudd came to the post-game broadcast after her season-best performance, including a stellar third quarter in which she scored five three-pointers.
And the one interviewing her was Sue Bird, a former No. 1 draft pick and a former Husky as well. But, with her travel complaints, fans feel that Fudd hampered the enormity of this moment.
“Ohh poor Azzzi, can’t eat her own food during road trips for a job she’s professionally paid to do. Bawling like a spoiled b*** over here. Never heard anything like this. What a dim****,” summed up another.
From Fudd’s perspective, the distance she had to travel on the road was a lot. For the first game of this stretch, she had to travel over 1,200 km to Chicago for the Chicago Sky game. The Wings had to travel 900 km from Chicago to play the Atlanta game and then another 1,200+ km to reach New York and face the Liberty.
Thus, it’s been quite a hectic travel week for Azzi Fudd, who isn’t habituated to these travel dynamics of the WNBA. But a fan didn’t hesitate to point out that this hectic travel schedule comes with the perks of playing in the pro circuit. And to do the same, she’s also earning a historic rookie salary under the new CBA that no other player has received.
The good news for Fudd is that the Dallas Wings won’t have to travel at least for the next two games. They host the Las Vegas Aces up next on May 28, and then the Seattle Storm on June 1 at the College Park Center.
