Alex Pretti was the second person fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis within a month after Renee Good, and his death has led to strong reactions across the country. Unrivaled came forward to show their support and held a moment of silence on Saturday night to reflect on the tragic events. Breanna Stewart didn’t hold back her emotions either and came out with a sign reading “ABOLISH ICE” before the Mist vs. Vinyl game.

Pretti worked as an intensive care nurse and was 37 years old. Though the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed it was an act of self-defense as Pretti was resisting arrest and was armed, there have been questions surrounding the legitimacy of the turn of events. Eyewitnesses, officials, as well as the victim’s family, have challenged the DHS’s story, which has invited a wide range of opinions on the internet.

Stewart is a significant name in women’s basketball, and her joining the cause and speaking up against this generated positive conversation among locals.

“We’re so fueled by hate right now instead of love, so I wanted to have a simple message of ‘Abolish ICE,’ which means having policies to uplift families and communities instead of fueling fear and violence,” Stewart said of her gesture.

This is not her first rodeo either, as she has always been vocal about anything that she felt wasn’t going right, advocating on issues such as sexual abuse and reproductive rights, and participating in Black Lives Matter protests.

“That’s our goat 🐐” a fan commented.

Fans weren’t the only ones in awe, as reporter Greydy Diaz revealed that Allisha Gray tipped her hat, calling Stewart a “great teammate and better person.”

Many other WNBA players, including Unrivaled cofounder Napheesa Collier, posted their support for the protestors in Minneapolis. Paige Bueckers also pledged to donate $50,000 to the Hopkins Strong Relief Fund, which supports food security in her home community.

But amid all the praise, there have been quite a few comments criticizing her stance.

“Stick to basketball, please, and sign the damn CBA deal,” a fan commented, not pleased with the direction Stewart was taking.

While the CBA is still stuck in a status quo period, which fans would want resolved at the earliest, the recent streak of shooting incidents has really rattled the community.

WNBA star Natisha Heideman also sent her “love and prayers” to the Minnesota locals.

“In this moment of grief, we choose compassion and unity,” Unrivaled mentioned in its statement of solidarity.
