“LA Sparks guard Ariel Atkins surprised teachers at PACE alternative high school for the 4th Annual Teacher Appreciation Day put on by the Ariel Atkins Foundation in partnership with the Lids Foundation,” a post from analyst Sarah Chovnick read on Instagram. Atkins was tagged as a post author and was featured in the attached video.
Atkins, who is from Duncanville, Texas, returned to her hometown to host her fourth annual teacher appreciation day. The event has its roots in 2023, when she conducted it in Wards Seven and Eight in Washington. Atkins helped the Washington Mystics win a championship in 2019 and was a part of the team for seven years until 2024.
Since then, the project expanded into Duncanville last year, a full-circle moment for Atkins. Atkins’ latest initiative made a significant impact, with more than $80,000 worth of school supplies donated to support educators.
“They’re actually located in where my old elementary school used to be, so it’s pretty cool to be able to walk the halls and stuff,” Atkins said.
“We’re able to give them a Lids gift card because we partner with the Lids Foundation, and we’re able to give them a $100 Visa gift card. We’re able to give them all the supplies that they actually asked for. And that’s really my favorite part of it is we allow them to fill out a survey and tell us what they actually need versus just throwing a bunch of pencils at them.”
The initiative matters because of just how much teachers have to spend on supplies. According to a national survey conducted by AdoptAClassroom.com in 2025, teachers spent an average of $895 out of pocket during the 2024-25 school year. It was also found that the median budget for school-provided supplies was only $200, and an overwhelming 97% of teachers said that the amount was insufficient.
