Sabrina Ionescu’s College and Professional Career

When we say that Sabrina Ionescu was built for the league, it’s not unfounded. The five-foot-eleven shooting guard was an absolute beast in Oregon and broke records all across NCAA DI. One of her biggest achievements? A clean sweep of NPOY honors in her senior year. In 2019-20, Ionescu won the Naismith Trophy, John Wooden Award, Wade Trophy, and was the unanimous AP Player of the Year. Not to mention, Ionescu is the only player in NCAA Division I history (men’s or women’s) to record over 2,000 points (2,562), 1,000 rebounds (1,040), and 1,000 assists (1,091) in a career, and she eventually led her team to a Final Four in 2019.

Headed into the league, we expected her to shine right away, but fate had other plans. After just three games, her rookie season was cut short due to an ankle injury. However, Ionescu persevered! The New York Liberty star, in just her sixth career game, recorded a triple-double, becoming the youngest player to ever do so until recently!

Throughout the years, Ionescu has been a symbol of excellence for the WNBA. From her three-point shootout with Steph, to repeated All-Star and All-WNBA appearances, we knew the young star was on the come-up, but there was always one thing missing–a championship. And last year, against the Minnesota Lynx, Sabrina Ionescu rounded out her resume with an amazing chip! Ionescu averaged 18.2 points and 6.2 assists per game in the 2024 regular season, leading the Liberty to a 32-8 record and the eventual championship. In the current WNBA season, her production remarkably remained fairly similar as she averaged 18.2 points again. However, the team could not reach the heights of the previous year.

This time around, they ended the regular season with a 27-17 record (5th Seed), and the team’s bid to be repeat champions ended at in the first round.

Sabrina Ionescu’s Brand Endorsements

The New York Liberty star, in the business world, is a shark! Ionescu signed a massive multi-year deal with Nike right as she entered the league, which turned out to be a landmark statement for women’s basketball because of her signature shoe and clothing line. And when Sabrina Ionescu talked about this partnership, she had nothing but glowing praise.

“Their partnership has a dream come true, everything I could’ve possibly imagined and more. From when I got drafted in 2020 to now, just their vision for me, and for women’s sports has far exceeded my expectations, and just seeing how they’ve been able to advocate for what they believe in.” She said, reflecting on how the brand understood her vision and brought it out with her signature shoe, the Sabrina 1s.

She made the best use of Nike’s contract with her shoe, and as a result, she has seen tremendous success. The Sabrina 1s were the first shoes to be worn regularly by NBA and WNBA players! And that aligned with Sabrina’s vision for the shoe as well. “My main goal was wanting a unisex shoe to give opportunity for girls, boys, anyone to wear the shoe. I was excited to continue to break down barriers and wanted to do that with them, who also believe in that as well.”

Moving on, she also signed a deal with the Swiss watchmaker brand, Tissot. Per the contract, Ionescu features in Tissot’s marketing ventures and selects from their watch range. She also coordinates with the sports business media network, Boardroom, which was established by NBA star Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman, offering an inside perspective to enhance her business portfolio.
