The Washington Mystics and Chicago Sky entered their final game of the 2026 WNBA regular season with very different goals. While the Sky were looking to close out their campaign on a positive note, the Mystics were hoping to carry their momentum into the playoffs. But as the two teams battled at Capital One Arena, one fan’s actions forced security to act.
Chicago State of Mind Sports shared a clip on X, which showed a fan being escorted out of the arena while revealing that the spectator was apparently a season-ticket holder known for making the chant during games. This time, however, the chanting had dire consequences for the seasoned fan.
During the second quarter, the Sky’s center Elizabeth Williams was sent to the free-throw line after a shooting foul by Shakira Austin. But as the 33-year-old prepared for her attempt, the Mystics fan reportedly began chanting from the stands. And while it’s unclear what was said, it did appear to do the trick, as Williams airballed her free-throw attempt.
Chants and boos from opposing fans have long been part of the sporting experience, particularly when players are at the free-throw line, with fans attempting to disrupt their concentration. This time, the incident has added an unexpected subplot to what was otherwise the final chapter of the regular season for both teams. While the fan’s chant may have helped disrupt Williams’ free throw, his removal ultimately had little impact on the outcome of the game, as the Mystics still controlled the game.
Washington defeated Chicago 101-93, denying the Sky a chance to finish their season with back-to-back victories. Sonia Citron of the Mystics led the team with 21 points, making 2-of-3 three-pointers while adding five rebounds and five assists. On the other hand, for the Sky, Elizabeth Williams ended the night with nine points in 28 minutes, scoring one of the two FTs she took.
Williams has not had a great season from the FT line. The center, who has been with the Chicago Sky since 2023, is averaging a career-low of 45.1% from the free-throw line, making only 41 of the 91 free throws she has taken this season. In contrast, she was scoring her best from the FT line during the 2020 season when she was playing for the Atlanta Dream. Back then, Williams averaged 74.2% over the 22 games she played.
With this win, Washington improved to 28-16 and now heads into the postseason carrying the momentum of a four-game winning streak. For Chicago, however, the final buzzer marked the end of its 2026 campaign.
The Sky finish the regular season with a 16-28 record and will miss the playoffs. So while the attention around their final game may have centered on a Mystics fan being escorted out after disrupting Williams at the free-throw line, Washington ultimately had the last word where it mattered most – on the scoreboard.
