A’ja Wilson talks about Dawn Staley and the bond she shared with the coach

A’ja Wilson was under the South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley during her college career. However, not everyone knows that the two share a special bond. Dawn Staley has always been like a second mother to A’ja. Furthermore, she even gave a shout-out to the dynamic two-time MVP on GMA, “To the best basketball player in the world, to the best of all the list of best sellers, thank you for giving us black excellence, A’ja Wilson style. Unquestionably, Dawn Staley had a huge part in A’ja’s life. This is what she has to say about her coach, “She allowed me to be a young woman. Allowed me to grow and have a full experience of being in a college. Now it has built me into the woman I am today.” A’ja further continued, showing gratitude towards Staley, by saying, “To talk about dyslexia and write a book, those stepping stones, the foundation she laid down for me to be professional and disciplined, just helped me be true to myself. She allowed me to find myself and I love that.”

However, South Carolina’s Naismith coach of the year is not the only one that A’ja holds dear to herself. She also talked about another essential support in her life.

In a recent interview with Robin Roberts, A’ja Wilson opened up about her grandmother. Robin asked her about the bronze statue on the University of South Carolina campus.  She responded with, “My grandmother couldn’t walk on that campus, my dad couldn’t go to that school, and now I’m immortalized there. I wanted to share the story that someone planted the seeds for me and now it’s on me and my generation to continue planting those seeds for the next.”
