Sophie Cunningham’s ongoing spotlight saw yet another high-profile moment on August 8, when a hard foul from Chicago Sky guard DiJonai Carrington ended with Carrington being ejected. However, Cunningham’s views on the incident are very different from those of Sky coach Tyler Marsh.

The incident happened during the Indiana Fever’s 90-86 win against the Sky. During the first quarter, Carrington chased down Cunningham on a transition possession and, while attempting a block, made heavy contact with her head and neck. Cunningham reacted immediately, rushing to Carrington to confront her. The officials initially called Carrington for a Flagrant 1, but after they reviewed it, it was upgraded to a Flagrant 2, and Carrington was ejected from the game.

“I think that’s why she did it, because she wants attention. I mean, s***, like, people have started craving attention. Like, go get it somewhere else. Go do something good in the world, I don’t know. Yeah, I popped up, and KK had my back.”
During the game, Cunningham got back to her feet after being knocked down by Carrington’s hit, and even retaliated before teammates stepped in. According to Crew Chief Maj Forsberg, Cunningham wasn’t given a punishment because the crew deemed her reaction acceptable. Forsberg and the crew, however, thought that the contact Carrington made with Cunningham was “unnecessary and excessive to a player in a vulnerable position.” Cunningham stood by her actions even after the game.
“Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary. I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent-up stuff. So get your s*** off. That’s fine. I can take it.”
“I don’t even know her,” she added. “She wasn’t even on the team last year when all that was going on. But I do think when people play the Fever, we’re nationally televised, there’s a lot of eyes on us and people just want attention. And that’s her just trying to get attention.”
However, Sophie Cunningham‘s interpretation of Carrington’s intent behind the event was completely different from that of Sky head coach Tyler Marsh. While the player viewed the incident as deliberate, the coach thought it was a basketball play.
“In the moment, I thought that she made a play on the ball,” Marsh told reporters after the game, as posted to X by @ChiStateOfMind_.
“I didn’t think it warranted a flagrant two. I didn’t see the replay when it happened. So that was my initial thoughts. But the officials made what they made. I haven’t looked at that play since. So I really don’t know if it was justified or not. So that’s what I thought in the moment.”
While Sophie Cunningham viewed the foul as unnecessary and intentional, Marsh believed it was a legitimate basketball play. Ultimately, Carrington paid the price for an unfortunate move with an early ejection.
