Sophie Cunningham became a household name in Indiana last season, but doubts about her return to the Indiana Fever have only grown since. The ongoing CBA delays have added even more uncertainty, as no one knows how roster decisions will shift once the new terms are finalized. And in the midst of all this speculation, Sophie has now dropped a major bombshell for both Fever and WNBA fans.

In this context, Cunningham made news on the Halftime Circus show by talking openly about her professional limbo. “I am not with anyone right now; no one is with anybody. Now I am part of the new CBA, so I have to see who I am with. It could be with Fever or might not be with Fever.”
After the 2025 season with Indiana, Cunningham will be an unrestricted free agent for the first time in her career. Even though she averaged 8.6 points in 30 games, starting 13 of them, she still can’t be sure about her future, given the uncertainty and finances of the teams. There’s growing anxiety around the league as talks haven’t materialized lately, and things have been pushed.

The new deadline has been moved to January 9th, 2026, as things didn’t work out in the last month. But even now, both sides have the option to terminate the extension with 48 hours’ advance notice. Though neither side wishes to go to a lockout, the chances of things going south can’t be ruled out.
“The sides would instead enter a period of status quo, which would keep working conditions the same and continue to allow players to use team facilities and receive medical benefits. However, at any point, the players’ union or league could announce a work stoppage. They can also continue negotiating in the status quo period. They could still agree to another extension by Sunday’s deadline.”

But even in Sophie’s uncertainty about where she will land, there’s a silent preference for Indiana. When Halftime Circus host Caleb Pressley asked Cunningham to choose between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, she chose Clark right away. Well, her time or wish to come back to Indiana will still need some time, but she is all set to make her next big offseason move.

Sophie Cunningham makes her move to Project B
Sophie Cunningham just made a bold move that could reshape women’s basketball. She signed with Project B, a new league launching in 2026 that is already drawing major WNBA talent. The roster includes Nneka Ogwumike, Kelsey Mitchell, Jonquel Jones, and Jewell Loyd. These aren’t players seeking extra chances. They’re stars who are tired of waiting for the WNBA to pay them what they’re worth.

What sets Project B apart is that it works in a way that no other women’s basketball project has before. Every offseason, six teams will travel and play in tournaments over the course of seven weeks. Their goal is simple: to give people what the WNBA won’t. Players make twice as much as the highest-paid player in the WNBA and get real equity stakes in the league.

No one knows about Cunningham’s influence over Caitlin Clark, but their close bond can be a secret weapon for Project B. If the league can sign Clark and Cunningham, it goes from being an interesting idea to a real threat. The money alone is huge and can help dilute the W’s influence.
Also, Sophie’s move sends a strong message to the WNBA: players now have choices. There’s Unrivaled already doing its part. Now, Cunningham’s choice shows that women’s basketball talent won’t stay where it is just because that’s how things have always been. The CBA is still frozen, so Project B looks less like a risky bet and more like the safer one. What do you think about this? Do let us know!
