WNBA officials found themselves under scrutiny after a controversial call involving Sophie Cunningham during the Indiana Fever’s loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday. What appeared to many fans as a clear offensive foul in Cunningham’s favor instead resulted in a defensive foul called on the Fever guard. And as a result, it has sparked immediate backlash across social media and raised fresh questions about the league’s officiating standards.

Brick Center shared a clip of the controversial sequence that unfolded during the second quarter of the game. While playing tight on-ball defense near the sideline, Cunningham took a hard elbow to the face from Lynx forward Nia Coffey, who was attempting to swing her arms.
Of course, the referees did blow the whistle immediately after that sequence of actions. However, they called a defensive foul on Sophie Cunningham. And even after they stopped play to review the contact for a potential hostile act, the officiating crew upheld the defensive foul against Cunningham, ruling that Coffey had not committed a hostile act.
For many fans, however, the obvious foul in that sequence was the elbow Cunningham took to the face. As a result, they believed the contact should have resulted in an offensive foul on Coffey instead. “100% Offensive Foul,” one fan wrote.
And they were not shy to say it. “That is ridiculous, the WNBA refs are a joke,” one fan commented. Another was even more critical, saying, “To be fair, the WNBA refs are the worst refs in any sport on Earth. So it may be they just suck.”
Some fans even believed the decision to call the foul against Cunningham was deliberate. “Cheap shot to the face and she gets called for a foul. Go figure. It’s the WNBA and the officials stink.” Others went a step further, saying, “This league will be dead in 3 years at this rate.,” another fan commented.
“The WNBA is the WNBA’s worst enemy,” wrote another. “WNBA refs are all 🤡 [Clowns],” added another. Then again, the frustration with the WNBA’s officiating is nothing new. While the league implemented a special officiating task force ahead of the season, the fans’ response to this call, and several others, is a clear indication that it hasn’t really changed how fans feel.
The WNBA has announced it will launch a centralized Replay Center to make better calls in situations like this. The replay center will “leverage NBA’s state-of-the-art Replay Center in Secaucus, N.J.”However, it won’t be operational before the 2027 season.
When the final whistle sounded, the game finished in the Minnesota Lynx’s favor as they secured a 108-100 victory. The loss ended the Indiana Fever‘s five-game winning streak. Indiana will now hope to bounce back when it faces the Las Vegas Aces in its next game.
