If you’ve been keeping up with the WNBA, aside from all the CBA chatter, Sophie Cunningham broke the internet this week by surpassing Caitlin Clark on Google’s annual “Year in Search”. The list, which reveals the 10 most-searched athletes in the U.S., placed the Indiana Fever wing at No. 7, the very same spot Clark held last year. While many assumed she was ecstatic about it, Cunningham has given fans and fellow athletes another glimpse of her unfiltered side.

During her latest appearance on the December 9 episode of her Show Me Something podcast with co-host West Wilson, the WNBA star opened up about the new feat, sounding somewhat confused.

“I really don’t know how to feel about that,” Cunningham said. “It’s kind of cool, I guess, like you’re the only female up there. That’s fun… But there’s no real feelings towards it. People want to know more about me.”

However, when Wilson pointed out that many athletes on the list “haven’t done s—,” it prompted Cunningham to crack a joke on herself.

“I’m kind of one of them,” Clark’s (former) teammate said.

When Wilson clarified that only a few players on the list are on their second professional contract, Cunningham leaned into her self-awareness.

“Does that mean I’m a late-bloomer, though?” the WNBA star said. “If I’m on my second contract, it takes a lot more for people to know who I was.”

The conversation inevitably circled back to Clark…

“What’s actually crazy is that you’re on this and not CC, even touching it,” Wilson noted.

Wilson was sure that if Google were to reveal the next five slots, making it a top 15 list, then Clark would be on it.

“Yeah, but I’m sure like, maybe last year, (Clark) was No. 1, right?” Cunningham responded matter-of-factly. “Like, this is just this year. So she blew up in college, you know what I mean?”

While Sophie Cunningham’s popularity came as a surprise to many, with her on-court and off-court shenanigans, it isn’t unthinkable that she surpassed the biggest name in women’s basketball right now. Be it by showing up as a guest caddie at the Annika Pro-Am golf tournament or giving back to the community by participating in a community Thanksgiving event hosted by her team and the Indiana Pacers.

Fans truly embraced her during the June 17 game against the Connecticut Sun, when she was ejected after a brawl with Jacy Sheldon, defending Clark after Sheldon appeared to poke her in the eye.

But it’s worth noting that ranking higher in the search list isn’t any indication of her market value or the impact she had on the sport. It’s just like Cunningham said, “People want to know more about (her).” While fans have loved watching the Cunningham-Clark 2025 partnership, the duo’s future together is uncertain.

How does Sophie Cunningham’s future with the Indiana Fever look?

After joining the Fever in a trade from the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham quickly became a key part of the team. She posted career-high shooting marks, with 46.9% from the field and 43.2% from deep, and delivered standout performances, including a double-double against the Atlanta Dream and an 18-point outing vs. her former team.

And while the fans loved to watch Clark, Cunningham, and Lexie Hull – the “Tres Leches” play together, their run quickly came to an end after Clark was ruled out of the season due to a groin injury. Soon after, Cunningham also suffered a season-ending MCL injury in August.

But while many expected to see them play together in the upcoming season, it might not even happen.

With nearly the entire Fever roster, including Cunningham, set for free agency, it’s unclear whether the pair will suit up together. And if fans were looking for any hint of where her future lies… on her podcast, the WNBA star didn’t sound confident that her future will be with the Fever.

“I think the next team I play for, I want a bigger contract, so I can then buy a house and be homey and cozy,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham rejoining the Fever depends on whether the franchise can give her what she wants. If not, a player with her glittery resume will be poached by another team in no time once CBA negotiations are complete.
