There’s a strange connection between basketball players and their love of golf. Michael Jordan tried the swing, Steph Curry is already winning, and now LeBron James is learning. But it isn’t just the NBA; even our Caitlin Clark has been a big fan of golf for ages. “Maybe play some golf. That’s what I’m gonna do until it becomes too cold in Indiana… I’ll become a professional golfer,” said Caitlin Clark about her offseason plans. And as she returns to the LPGA Pro-Am event, two of her teammates are willingly looking to help her out!

A few hours ago, the official Instagram accounts of the Indiana Fever and the LPGA Tour collaborated on a post where Caitlin Clark is posing alongside 2024 LPGA Tour Player of the Year Nelly Korda. The duo was out on a golf course, holding jerseys with their respective names on them. The caption read, “Caitlin Clark returns to play at the @theannikalpga driven by Gainbridge Pro-Am on November 12 at Pelican Golf Club 👀⛳”. Soon, the post got a comment from Sophie Cunningham.
The comment written by Sophie dragged Lexie into business, saying, “@caitlinclark22 need a couple of caddies? @lexiehulll 😏🍻”. That ‘smirk emoji’ and the ‘beer glass’ emoji highlighted that Cunningham certainly wanted to do something more than just drive her teammate around. Soon, Lexie Hull responded to Cunningham’s comment by writing, “@sophie_cham sign us up!!!” Well, the fun around the golf post isn’t random, as Sophie Cunningham herself is an avid golfer.

In fact, back in September 2023, Sophie hosted a golf tournament at the Oaks Golf Course in an effort to provide a platform for Missouri high school girls’ basketball. ‘Monday’s Norm’ and ‘Sophie Golf Classic’ accumulated 60 participants, from whom the proceeds raised at the event went toward the Norm Stewart and Cunningham Classic basketball tournament held that year. According to Sophie, the Classic features high school girls from around the state. Other than that, she and Clark have been captured hitting the green occasionally.

Lexie Hull is another person with whom Clark has played golf in the past. One of the most viral moments featuring the two players took place back in October 2024. Clark and Hull took it to the green for a par-3 contest, which Clark nearly ended with a hole-in-one. She came inches away from the feat, but instead settled for a birdie on her next stroke. Hull missed her second stroke, and Clark won. The 2024 Rookie of the Year winner reacted victoriously by laughing in Hull’s face.
Given the trio’s combined interest in golf, it’s no wonder that Cunningham and Hull are willing to be beside Clark as she attempts to make a mark at the LPGA Pro-Am event. Then again, Clark might like to be solo. After all, that is one of the things she likes about golf.

Caitlin Clark revealed Golf provides an “escape” from team aspect
Back in April, Caitlin Clark went into detail about her interest in golf during an interview with ‘talkSPORT’. She even discussed the competitive level at which Michael Jordan and Stephen Curry play on the green. This discussion led the interviewer to ask why so many NBA and WNBA stars like to play a round. This led to Caitlin Clark sharing her admiration for golfers who go out there with only their own talent.

“It’s a great escape for us,” said the 23-year-old. “We’re so used to the team aspect, and then you get out on the course and it’s such a challenge with yourself. It’s you, the golf ball, the golf club, the course, that’s all it is. You don’t have teammates to rely on; it’s just a battle with yourself, and it’s almost like a mental exercise. It really makes you mentally tough, and I think that’s also what’s really impressive about these professional golfers out here, like you hit a bad shot, you don’t have time to sulk like you’ve got to move on.”

Despite that, Clark is motivated to love golf more thanks to her teammates. After all, as she once revealed, “I know there’s some people who take their clubs on the road. I haven’t quite done that, I’m usually too focused on basketball, but Lexi Hull, one of my teammates, was talking to me, she’s like, ‘We’re taking our clubs on the road this year, like we’re trying to hit all these different golf courses.’” Therefore, in a way, golf provides a balance between relying on yourself when playing and having your teammates as motivation.
