Will Sophie Cunningham ever catch a break? This year has been filled with ups and downs for the Indiana Fever star. The backup guard has dealt with scandals, accusations, on-court drama, and fights alike. Although, to her credit, she has come out of it with nary a scratch on her person. Ever since the Clark-Sheldon-Mabrey incident, Cunningham has been in the spotlight quite a bit, for both good and bad reasons. Some love her, some hate her, but almost everyone’s talking about her.

And let’s be honest, every Indy fan adores the six-foot-one guard. Everyone loves Caitlin Clark, and by extension, they love Cunningham for being protective of her backcourt partner. Right after her flagrant foul on Sheldon, her Indiana jersey sold out at the official store. So, despite her tough exterior and ‘enforcer’ status, fans absolutely adore her.

A perfect example of her stardom comes through a video posted on IG by motivational speaker Travis Howze. “Sophie promised my daughter that she would sign her jersey.” In it, we can see Cunningham passing by his two young daughters, telling them that she’d be back to sign their jerseys and posters. But after spending about half an hour warming up, and with the crowd pouring in, they lost hope that the Indiana star would be coming back.

Cunningham, however, did not forget! As soon as her warmup ended, she made a beeline for the two young kids, smiling hard while signing their apparel. Or, as Howze put it in his post caption, “She remembered that she gave her word to this little girl, kept her promise, and made a B line straight for her. Thank you for this moment, Sophie.” This video was a perfect example of how Sophie Cunningham has a definite soft side to her.

The Indiana Fever star reposted Howze’s video on her story, and even commented under his post! “I’m always running a little late heehee.” She said, showing love to the two kids. After everything that has gone on this season, these small moments go a long way in dispelling any incorrect assumptions about Cunningham, especially when the caption reads, “I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many celebrities, athletes, etc., but nothing tops this brief moment with my daughter and @sophie_cham.”

On the flip side, the Fever Guard is getting approached for promotions and ads left, right, and center. After all, who wouldn’t want Indiana’s protector on their ad campaign? Let’s find out the significance of her latest promotional adventure!

Sophie Cunningham admits her protector status during paid promotion

Ads featuring athletes are always hit or miss. Some companies get the assignment, and some don’t, especially with players that are as polarized as Sophie Cunningham. There are quite a few people in her camp because they respect the way she showed up for her team, while others? They aren’t convinced. However, a recent endorsement post with Ring showed that Cunningham knows how to market herself.

Even though the Indiana Fever guard stayed mum after the Jacy Sheldon situation, she didn’t hesitate to hint at it during the ad. “In light of recent events, you guys know how serious I am about protecting my girls on the court. But what’s protecting my home court, aka my actual home? The obvious choice is Ring,” Cunningham said in an IG video she did with the company, “On the court, I protect my team. At home, @ring protects me. 💙#ad”.

More than anything, it shows that Sophie Cunningham is aware of her newfound role on the team. She knows the precedent that has been set and doesn’t seem to mind it at all. Currently, Cunningham is averaging 5.3 points, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal on limited minutes each night, but her impact on the court is much bigger than that.

It will be interesting to see whether Cunningham will be able to grow into her new role and capitalize on the opportunities that she’ll get now. Everyone likes a loyal player who stands up for their teammates, and Cunningham is super protective of her squad. Now, will her impact be enough for Indiana to win a chip? Only time will tell.
