Actor and director Tom Welling once said, “The idea of a perfect vacation is not working or not having to work and having no appointments.” When you work, work hard. When you play, play hard and put everything related to your work on hold for now. With a WNBA season taking up 5 months of a player’s life every year, it’s only fitting that basketball is not on their minds during the offseason. While we can’t speak for everyone, we know that Sophie Cunningham wants to take a mental break from the sport.

The Indiana Fever star recently hosted another episode of her ‘Show me Something’ podcast. During the discussion with co-host and television personality West Wilson, Cunningham revealed that she hasn’t watched “a lick” of the Finals, or any part of the WNBA for quite a while. In fact, the last communication she claimed to have had with her teammates was when the Fever squad did exit interviews. After all, this is her vacation time, and she doesn’t wish to think about what is happening at her workplace.

“I need a cleanse. Like, I’m booking vacations,” said Cunningham. She later pitched to her co-hostWest, we need to go on a vacation and do a podcast. I’m not kidding. Like, let’s go to somewhere on a boat.”

Sophie Cunningham hasn’t played since around mid-August, as she had torn her right MCL in a matchup against the Connecticut Sun. Despite that, she kept tabs on the latest happenings in the WNBA world. She didn’t stay away even after the Indiana Fever’s postseason run ended. After all, that is when Napheesa Collier made serious allegations against the WNBA commissioner, Cathy Engelbert. Cunningham stood beside Collier and highlighted her support in a different episode of the ‘Show me Something’ podcast.

Simultaneously, she said, “At the end of the day, everyone’s fed up — fed up with how the league is treating us. They should be ashamed of themselves for what they’re giving back to us because it’s nothing. It is nothing. They’re not listening. The thing is, they’re not even engaging with us. It is bad”.

Given this issue, and how the Fever guard had previously criticized the league’s pay structure, Cunningham’s decision of a cleanse could also be related to the broader frustration that is being felt across the WNBA world.

From what fans know from her social media posts, Sophie Cunningham certainly loves to travel. Back in March, she had embarked on a beachside vacation with her cousins. While they had towels wrapped around their heads, the WNBA star highlighted herself basking in and taking the full rays of the sun. In early September, Cunningham shared a picture of herself posing next to a black GMC pickup truck, along with a caption that read, “back when my knee was healthy”. Therefore, we don’t know how far Cunningham can travel while in her condition. However, with a reported net worth of $2 million, any corner of the world is open to her.

Wherever Sophie Cunningham goes, one hopes that she takes it easy. She is going to need all the strength she has available when making a comeback with the Indiana Fever in the next WNBA season. After all, the player has made it clear that, for now, her future only has the Indiana Fever in her sights.

Sophie Cunningham Highlights Future With Fever Amid Free Agency Concerns: “I might be blonde….”

Sophie Cunningham was traded from the Phoenix Mercury to the Indiana Fever last season as part of a four-team trade. Over the course of the season, she consistently highlighted how happy she is in Indiana. After all, not only was she teammates with a popular star like Caitlin Clark, she also had players like Kelsey Mitchell, Aliyah Boston, and Odyssey Sims helping her out on the offense. She also had the support and affection from the team’s head coach Stephanie White, who once said, “Her energy, her bubbly personality, her competitive fire, I mean, I don’t know that I would say anyone on our team outside Sophie and [Clark] would have been spicy before”. Therefore, why would Cunningham choose to leave?

Back in early October, during the Fever’s exit interview, Sophie Cunningham was asked about her future. She replied, “When you’ve been through this type of season together, when you’re invested in each other’s lives outside of basketball, of course you want to come back. I’m definitely gonna be entertaining other teams, other offers, but… I’ve had a great time here, and I’d like to continue that. But I also think with the new CBA, there’s a lot on the line.”

The 1-year, $100,000 contract that Cunningham had signed will expire in this off-season. After that, the player will be an unrestricted free agent. She will most certainly have free rein to re-sign with Indiana after the ratification of a new collective bargaining agreement, which, at the moment, is creating a separate issue in the WNBA world.

“I might be blonde, but I can’t just not look at other opportunities,” Cunningham added.
