Very few names in the WNBA right now are enjoying more fame than Sophie Cunningham, especially since she joined the Indiana Fever. First, she won a lot of hearts when she expressed her desire to play with Caitlin Clark. Then she became a fan favorite with her enforcer charisma. While her second year in Indiana has been tinged with controversy over transgender athletes, her market demand has only risen.

With the offseason in full swing, Cunningham has revealed her busy schedule. In the next few days, the Fever bench star is set to be on the road for her appointments, and her first stop is the Circuit of The Americas in Austin for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
“My week looks like going to Austin for F1, heading out to LA for a couple of meetings. Actually gonna go to Dancing with the Stars live with my sister Lindsey,” Cunningham said on the “No Hesitation” podcast on YouTube. “So that’ll be super fun. Heading out to Phoenix to do another commercial, and then I’ll be back here, and then I’ll be in New York for a little bit of work too.”
Dancing with the Stars is perhaps the oddest item, but Cunningham slipped it into her sentence as if it were no big deal. If one trait stands out about Cunningham, it is her fearless confidence, and she had no doubt at all about her dancing skills. So when host Drew Hanlen asked how she would do if she appeared on the reality TV show as a contestant, she replied with a great level of interest.
“I would kill it. I say that, but it’s really hard. I’m good with my TikTok dances, but this is like legit dancing. But I grew up dancing. I loved it. And they’ve been trying to get me on for the last couple of years, but because I think they start filming in like September, it’s just not doable,” she added.
So far, neither Cunningham nor the show has announced what her role will be, but she would not be the first WNBA player to contest in the show. In 2018, in Season 26 of Dancing with the Stars, Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale competed with professional dancer Gleb Savchenko as her partner.
If you watched Sophie Cunningham dance to the country song “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” by Brooks & Dunn, you wouldn’t have a hard time believing the Fever star’s tease. Her TikTok account is full of her dancing videos, almost like a resume of her qualifications for the competition.
While Cunningham’ week looks busy, her WNBA future with the Fever poses a bigger question, both for her and the team. Cunningham signed a one-year deal with the team ahead of the 2026 season and is now an unrestricted free agent this offseason. She had a decent season with the Fever, averaging 7.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. However, it turned out to be her lowest-scoring season since 2021. She shot 46.0% from the field and 41.9% from the 3-point line.
What’s tough is that Cunningham’s 2026 season was mostly in the news because of controversy. Her comments about transgender participation in women’s sports in July sparked a huge controversy that ended up involving former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White.
Cunningham had said to ESPN that “young girls” shouldn’t have to play against “biological men.”
The controversy attracted a lot of unwanted attention to the Fever during the season. Trans activists and fans on both sides stood outside the arenas during the Fever games either to support her or voice their disagreement with the Fever star. That has added to the uncertainty around her comeback to Indiana.
During the exit interview, Fever GM Amber Cox said that outside factors won’t impact Cunningham’s free agency and claimed the team would want to re-sign her. However, the franchise has fired Cox, and the Fever have not yet indicated whether they will pursue Cunningham in free agency.
The decision now rest in the hands of the incoming GM. Maybe Cunningham’s visits to LA or New York are related to her free agency.
