The Indiana Fever just played their most anticipated game of this week as they locked horns with the defending champion Las Vegas Aces. Although the game remained close, the Fever dominated the first half and carried a 42-37 lead into halftime. But while Indiana was busy controlling the game, a clip involving Caitlin Clark from the first quarter went viral, and fans couldn’t help but talk about the treatment of one of the biggest stars in the league.

With about five minutes left in the first quarter and the score tied at 8-8, Clark and Jewell Loyd battled in the paint for a rebound after an Aces miss. Clark successfully grabbed the ball, but within seconds, the officials called a loose-ball foul on the 24-year-old, which prompted the Fever head coach Stephanie White to throw both her hands up in clear frustration as she shouted, “WHAT?” from the sidelines. Even the Fever guard looked confused, but the call stood, and A’ja Wilson knocked down a 7-foot pull-up jump shot to give Las Vegas a 10-8 lead.

“That rebound call was one of the strangest whistles I’ve seen this season,” one fan wrote under a clip of the incident posted to X by Brick Center. Another added, “This is the equivalent if the NBA would mistreat LBJ.”

The treatment of Caitlin Clark has been one of the biggest talking points in the league this season. Fever HC White’s reaction to this most recent call is also indicative of the frustration these officiating decisions have caused. That conversation has sparked plenty of discourse throughout the year. Clark has been assessed technical fouls for clapping and even for simply saying “scoreboard” to an opponent.

Officials can misread situations sometimes. But many fans feel that, three months into the 2026 season, it’s becoming a pattern. And that pattern has pushed Clark dangerously close to a one-game suspension.

The Fever guard has already picked up seven technical fouls this season. That means if she receives just one more, she will automatically serve a one-game suspension.

Still, if you look closely at this loose-ball foul call, it appears that while securing the rebound, Caitlin Clark’s off-hand caught Loyd in the face, which may have been why the referee blew the whistle.

“It’s honestly more of an angle thing. The ref behind probably thought contact was made, but get your clicks,” one fan added. Another wrote, “I love Clark, but she hit the defender in the face with her hand. Clear foul.”

But to fuel this ‘treatment’ conversation, what Caitlin Clark does is only part of the story. The guard herself has been on the receiving end of several physical plays this season, and when the referees have failed to call them, it has only frustrated fans even more.

On June 24, when the Fever faced the Phoenix Mercury, cameras caught Alyssa Thomas making contact with Caitlin Clark’s throat with her fist during a loose-ball scramble. But the play continued without a whistle. Then, later in the same game, another player sent Clark to the locker room with a back injury after failing to give the Fever guard landing space while she was attempting a 3-point shot. And although the referees called the foul, they refused to upgrade it to a flagrant and instead kept it as a common foul.

Take all of that together, and you can understand why this conversation keeps happening.
