On Monday, DiJonai Carrington had one response to her controversy: 26 points, five steals, and a piece of WNBA history. But was it expected of her? Well, before Monday night’s game between the Chicago Sky and Seattle Storm, the headlines were dominated by everything that had happened away from the court. The on-court confrontation between Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham and Sky guard DiJonai Carrington on Saturday had sparked plenty of debate, followed by Carrington’s social media post that read “White Privilege” while tagging the Indiana Fever. She later posted again to explain her earlier message.

With all of that unfolding, the actual basketball understandably took a back seat. But on Monday night, Carrington made sure nobody questioned where her focus was.

On August 10, the 28-year-old had a chance to let her game do the talking. The Sky had already endured a difficult stretch, and after everything that followed the Fever game, Chicago badly needed something positive to rally around.

Carrington delivered.

Even though the Sky ultimately fell to the Storm, she turned in a performance that demanded attention. By the end of the night, she had been named the Player of the Game.

Perhaps Carrington set the tone before she even stepped onto the court.

Just before tipoff, she shared a meaningful Instagram story featuring a photo of herself with Cardi B’s “Ah Ha” playing in the background. Her caption was simple:

“anothaaaa opportunity to playyyy 🥳🥳🥳”

On its own, it was an upbeat message ahead of another WNBA game. But given everything that had happened over the previous few days, the post could also be viewed as a response to the criticism surrounding her return to the court.

Fox News journalist Dan Zaksheske had already taken a shot at the WNBA over DiJonai Carrington being available for the very next game following the Fever-Sky incident and everything that followed. Then Carrington let her performance take over the conversation.

The San Diego native played 27 minutes and erupted for a career-high 26 points, along with six rebounds, five steals, and one assist. Those numbers put her in rare company. She became just the second player this season, after A’ja Wilson, to record at least 25 points, five rebounds, and five steals in a single game.

But Carrington added another piece of history to the night.

She became the first player in WNBA history to record that stat line entirely off the bench. And the Chicago crowd noticed. When Carrington checked into the game, she received a loud ovation from the fans, another sign that the attention surrounding her had not diminished her connection with the Sky faithful.

Still, individual brilliance couldn’t save Chicago.

The Sky fell 97-88 to a Seattle team that had entered the night riding an 11-game losing streak. The difference-maker was Seattle center Dominique Malonga, who dominated on both ends of the floor with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks while shooting 9-of-14 from the field.

Malonga’s presence inside gave Chicago fits, while Seattle’s efficiency around the paint made it difficult for the Sky to string together enough defensive stops.

But Carrington wasn’t ready to let the game slip away quietly.

Trailing by 10 in the fourth quarter, she sparked Chicago’s comeback. She came up with a steal and finished a fast-break layup with under three minutes left, cutting Seattle’s lead to 84-82.

The problem was, the Sky couldn’t capitalize on the momentum.

Immediately after getting within two, Chicago turned the ball over on its next possession. Seattle’s Zia Cooke made them pay, knocking down a corner three to push the lead back to 89-82. Malonga then added a crucial layup as the Storm closed out the game on a 13-6 run.

The final score may suggest a tight battle, and for stretches, it certainly was. But there was more to Monday night than the scoreboard.

In fact, one of the most heartwarming moments of the evening came after the final whistle, and once again, Carrington found herself at the center of it.

In a tense moment during the Sky-Storm matchup, Natisha Hiedeman took a hard hit after running into a screen. She went down on the court, and moments later, the cameras caught her face turning red with pain as tears filled her eyes.

Her teammates immediately gathered around her, checking to make sure she was okay. Then DiJonai Carrington stepped in.

She leaned over and kissed Hiedeman on the forehead.

It was a small gesture, but it said plenty. For the fans watching, the moment was a reminder of the bond between the two players that goes far beyond the WNBA court.

After all, Carrington and Hiedeman spent three seasons together with the Connecticut Sun from 2021 through 2023, where they developed a close friendship. Their chemistry has continued to show up over the years, whether through postgame hugs, quick exchanges on the sideline, or viral social media moments, often alongside their former teammate Courtney Williams. So, perhaps Monday night’s game delivered more than anyone expected.
