The Indiana Fever had a nightmare run of injuries in the 2025 WNBA season. What was supposed to be a possible championship-contending campaign quickly fell apart, with players going down one by one like bowling pins. From Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson to Sophie Cunningham, Caitlin Clark, and Kelsey Mitchell, the Fever never got the chance to show their full potential. Now that these players recover and get their much-deserved rest in the off-season, veteran Colson has shared a heartfelt update on her recovery journey.

Making a recent appearance on Post Moves with Candace Parker & Aliyah Boston, the 36-year-old guard finally opened up about her recovery journey, where she is ‘ahead of schedule.’

She said, “This has made me like even more driven. I think I already was. But the mental and the physical, like you know, with any injury can be very up and down. So there are days where I’m feeling great and some days where I’m not. I wake up and I’m like, thinking I’m about to just take off, or like sometimes I’ll be like, about to jog, and I’m like, ‘Girl, you’re not cleared to jog!’. And so sometimes I’m having to rewire my mind. Like you’re not fully healthy. But I am, you know, I’m ahead of schedule. Our trainers are happy with the progress I’ve been making.”

Sydney Colson was averaging 2.4 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 2 assists per game before the franchise confirmed that she would miss the remainder of the season following a rough night against the Phoenix Mercury, where Colson tore her left ACL during the first quarter. Even through the frustration, Colson revealed that she is staying committed to her rehab, refusing to cut corners in her recovery. But at the same time, the star guard is speculating on the possibility of her retirement.

She further added, “I’m feeling stronger every day, and I’m rehabbing really hard. I told them and I told myself, I’m going to rehab as though I’m returning. And I think that God will make it very clear to me whether or not it’s what I’m supposed to do. But while I’m rehabbing, I want to have the mindset that I’m trying to get back on the court. If I do, great! If I can’t, great too! It’s just, you know, my time will be up.”

Colson, who has won two WNBA titles during her career, joined the Indiana Fever on a one-year contract worth $90,000 ahead of the 2025 season. With that deal now ending, she’ll enter free agency without any commitment to return, leaving her future with the Fever, and now, even in the league itself, uncertain for 2026.

If this does turn out to be Colson’s final season on the court, her career is far from slowing down. Outside of basketball, she co-hosts the podcast Unsupervised and has recently also stepped into stand-up comedy. So, while Colson seems at peace with whatever comes next, it’s safe to say many fans aren’t ready to see her hang up her jersey just yet.

Still, nothing matters more than Sydney Colson’s health. Whether she decides to make one final comeback or close this chapter for good, fans will have to wait and see what the future holds.

Sydney Colson and Co. rebuild Meets an Uncertain Offseason

Even with their roster decimated by injuries, the Indiana Fever somehow managed to turn their season into one of the most inspiring campaigns in franchise history. They not only secured their first playoff series win since 2015 but came just minutes away from making it back to the WNBA Finals before falling to the Las Vegas Aces in a heartbreaking overtime loss in Game 5 of the semifinals.

However, the challenges for the franchise are far from over, as most of their roster is hitting free agency this offseason. Right now, only three players, Aliyah Boston, Caitlin Clark, and Makayla Timpson, are under contract for 2026, leaving the rest of the roster wide open.

With key players like Sydney Colson, who is also considering a future outside the WNBA, Sophie Cunningham, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aari McDonald all entering free agency, the Fever front office faces a pivotal offseason. Re-signing their veteran core will be their main goal to maintain the team chemistry that carried them in the 2025 season.

But with the ongoing dispute between the WNBA and the WNBPA, regarding salary negotiations, the layers of complexities all seem to be colliding at once, leaving the Fever’s promising rebuild hanging in a cloud of uncertainty.
