The Iowa Hawkeyes fans have given birth to a new controversy. After WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes expressed her dissatisfaction regarding the time taken by the Hawkeyes’ star Caitlin Clark in inching closer to Kelsey Plum, the Iowa fans donned a t-shirt retaliating against Swoopes’ misinformed stance. The custom t-shirt had the quote “Don’t be a Sheryl” in yellow color on the black background of the tee.
In the wake of such a feud, many basketball athletes have jumped in, some of whom side with Swoopes on this. One such basketball player whose take made rounds on the internet was the Las Vegas Aces guard Kierstan Bell.
What did Bell say?

Bell tweeted the snap of a lady Iowa fan wearing the custom t-shirt and sided with Swoopes on the issue. She shared “I ain’t gone lie… I wanna be a Sheryl.” To which a fan replied, “Is KB a dude that plays in the wnba??” The fan also tweeted a meme that said “Well, she’s a guy, so…” Bell didn’t take much time before giving a classy reply by responding “I’m a lady.”

Notably, Swoopes had taken a dig at Clark for taking “an extra year to break that record (Kelsey Plum’s NCAA all time leading scorer).” Clark is just 39 points away from grabbing the top position of all-time NCAA women’s scorer and Plum is the leading scorer for now. While Plum had taken four years to make a record during her college career, Clark is also in her fourth year as a senior.

Hence, Swoopes’ attributing an extra year to Clark by referring to the extra year given to athletes for COVID eligibility is a misguided stand. Swoopes however went ahead with her stand in the podcast ‘Gil’s Arena’ questioning the record as per Sporting News: “Is it truly a broken record? I don’t know. I don’t think so. But yeah, that’ll go in the record books. And, I don’t think it should be.”

Meanwhile, Bell is not the only one to come forward and support Swoopes.
Which other athlete supported Swoopes?
Caitlin Clark’s arch-rival and the Louisiana State University Lady Tigers’ star Angel Reese too spoke in favor of Swoopes expressing that “i want to be like @airswoopes22.” Considering Reese’s past with Clark, this looks to be a disguised taunt to her fans who are wearing the custom t-shirt.

Hopefully, Clark will come forward and put an end to the whole controversy and even if she doesn’t, her fans can breathe a sigh of relief when she breaks the much-coveted record, registering her name by making history.
