Sonia Citron hasn’t seen a lot of time on the court for Team USA, with the lowest average of 10.7 per game. The Washington Mystics star was one of two players added at the last moment alongside her WNBA teammate Kiki Iriafen after A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum pulled out of the 2026 FIBA World Cup. However, as the wind is turning in the Americans’ favor, Citron is also reaping benefits with more time on the floor. However, things took a scary turn for the Mystics star during the quarterfinal game against Hungary.

The injury happened in the middle of the third quarter. At the 5:01 mark in the third period, Citron stepped forward to defend a shot from one of the Hungarian players in the paint. In the next second, she fell on the floor on her back, holding her face. The camera showed that the American star had possibly taken a hit in her face.
“Sonia Citron is shaken up, looks like she’s holding her head/face. She subs out but is remaining on the bench for now,” Alexa Philippou wrote on X.
Citron remained on the court for some time before getting back on her feet and then walked off the court, which wasn’t the best sign.
“And now she’s headed to the locker room,” Philippou wrote later.
There was hope that she would return to the court as she was still standing on the sideline, rubbing her face around her ear. However, around the 4:20 mark, she exited to the locker room, throwing fans into deep panic.
“Hoping it’s not really bad.”
Sonia Citron is one of the best young stars in the WNBA and one of the leading faces of the Washington Mystics. While she replaced Kelsey Plum, she is still a crucial part of Team USA. Losing any player on the team won’t be good news for the Americans.

The last two games have been outstanding for the Americans. After a dominant 41-point win over Czechia, they were back in the business again on Thursday. They dominated Hungary from the get-go. When everything was going well for Team USA, it is hard to expect any different reaction from a fan.
While some had emotional outbursts, some fans poured in prayers for Citron.
“I hope she is okay,” one fan wrote.
A concussion was among the fears with Citron. In light of how much concussion has impacted Satou Sabally’s career since last year, it could be a lot bigger concern for Citron.
“I hope Sonia is okay. Takes hard contact to the face and heading to the locker room.”

Good news came minutes after. Citron was back on the court at the start of the fourth quarter. The excitement among fans was very much apparent on X.
“Sonia citron is so tough,” commented one fan.
While Citron seemed to be ok, the Americans absolutely dominated Hungary with a 108-56 win, securing their largest margin of victory during this tournament so far. Citron had 2 points and 2 rebounds, shooting 100% from the field.
