Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings have finally snapped their two-game losing streak with an 86-83 win over the Connecticut Sun. It wasn’t a smooth win, though, as Wings forward Jessica Shepard made contact with Brittney Griner, resulting in a foul. It was a moment the broadcasters had to dissect in a slow-motion review.

“Oh yeah! The elbow of Jess Shepard… Right in the throat,” one WNBA broadcaster reacted as the replay rolled, while the broadcast partner could only add, “Yeah, that’s painful.”

It happened with 9:26 remaining in the third quarter, when Leila Lacan launched a pull-up jumper that extended Connecticut’s lead to 45-37. While the shot was still in the air, Shepard and Griner battled for position underneath the basket before Shepard made contact and Griner collapsed to the hardwood in pain.

Now, while it’s hard to tell whether it was intentional or a mistake, it immediately caught the officials’ attention. The controversial play where Alyssa Thomas made contact with Caitlin Clark’s throat on June 24 is still dominating WNBA headlines. So this time the officials acted immediately when Griner was struck.

They first assessed Shepard for a technical foul and awarded Griner a free throw, which she converted. However, they then decided to review the call and upgraded it to a Flagrant Foul 1, which sent Griner to the free-throw line once again.

Despite the setback, Dallas eventually recovered from a double-digit deficit and walked away with the win.

Paige Bueckers once again led the charge for Dallas and finished the night with a game-high 25 points along with seven rebounds and seven assists. She came in clutch in the fourth quarter, dropping 11 points when the Wings needed her most. But in a young team, she wasn’t the only reason why they won this game.

While she struggled for most of the night, Azzi Fudd knocked down two clutch jumpers in the final minutes, including the basket that put the Wings ahead 83-81 with just 51 seconds remaining.

Jessica Shepard, meanwhile, recovered well from the third-quarter incident. Despite getting a technical and a Flagrant 1 foul, she continued to battle on both ends of the floor before knocking down a late free throw to help Dallas close out the 86-83 victory.

Now, this wasn’t the prettiest win of the season, but it was an important one as the Wings have already recorded eight losses. So what matters is that in the end, Paige Bueckers and her teammates made sure the scoreboard ended in their favor, even if the moment everyone will remember came long before the final buzzer.
