Stephanie White probably didn’t expect to be greeted by a chorus of boos when she walked into Gainbridge Fieldhouse ahead of the Fever’s matchup with the New York Liberty. But that’s exactly what happened. The backlash came after White defended DiJonai Carrington’s hard foul on Sophie Cunningham, insisting the Sky guard never intentionally went for her neck. But instead of letting the noise become a distraction, the Fever players appeared even more determined to put on a show for their head coach.

“I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest. We’re going to ride for her, and we’re always going to have her back,” Caitlin Clark said in the press conference. And the Fever certainly backed those words up on the court.

Clark got the scoring started with her trademark three-pointer as the Indiana Fever powered past the New York Liberty 106-92, securing their second straight win over New York and earning some major praise from WNBA legend Tamika Catchings.

In a game ESPN gave the Indiana Fever just a 42.5% chance of winning, Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aliyah Boston made the Liberty look anything but favored. They combined for 69 points to lead Indiana to their 21st win of the season.

Mitchell came out firing with 12 points in the opening quarter as the Fever jumped out to a 29-23 lead, while Clark added 13 points in the second to help Indiana take a commanding 64-46 lead into halftime. They continued that dominance even after the break as they built a 20-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and eventually secured a 106-92 victory.

But Catchings’ “three-headed monster” comment isn’t just based on one impressive night against the Liberty.

While this team started its season with a roller-coaster ride, they are finally finding their footing behind three stars who each bring something different to the table.

Kelsey Mitchell has emerged as Indiana’s primary scoring engine, averaging 24.2 points per game, the second-highest mark in the league. Then there’s Aliyah Boston, who gives the Fever a dominant presence in the paint while averaging more than 16 points and a team-leading 8.5 rebounds per game.

Caitlin Clark, meanwhile, has continued to run the offense with around 8.1 assists per game while also contributing more than 20 points per night. Her performance against the Liberty helped her become the first player in WNBA history to lead the league in assists while also finishing in the top three in scoring, according to Real App on X. And the list doesn’t stop there.

It also marked her ninth game this season with at least 20 points and 10 assists, surpassing the eight such outings she recorded in 2024. According to Underdog WNBA, no other player has ever produced more than five such games in a single season.

The double-double also took Clark’s career total to 29 in just 82 games, moving her into third place among guards.

So with Mitchell providing the scoring, Clark controlling the offense, and Boston anchoring the interior, the Indiana Fever have won seven of their last nine games and now sit at 21-12, firmly establishing themselves in the top 5 of the WNBA standings.

Now, some of the greatest teams in WNBA history have relied on a core of three elite players who could complement each other and make it difficult for opponents to focus on just one star. The Houston Comets set that standard during the league’s early years by winning the first four championships behind Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, and Tina Thompson.

In more recent times, the Las Vegas Aces also had their own version of that formula during their back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023, with A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, and Jackie Young.

It remains to be seen whether this trio can replicate the same level of success achieved by those legendary trios mentioned above, but the road ahead won’t be easy for the Fever, and even Clark acknowledges just how challenging it will be.

Caitlin Clark Anticipates Tough Test Ahead for Fever

The Fever currently sit fourth in the table and are comfortably in the playoff picture, just three wins away from matching their win total from last season. But according to Caitlin Clark, this is no time for Indiana to get complacent, with plenty of tough games still ahead.

“We just gotta keep going,” she said. “We have another big one at home on Friday, and then we go on a two-week road trip. Our August is really tough. We play a lot of the top teams in the league. We’re gonna see what we’re made of, and that’s what’s gonna make you ready for the playoffs.”

The Fever will host the Dallas Wings next before hitting the road for a challenging five-game stretch. Indiana will face the Atlanta Dream, Toronto Tempo, Dallas Wings, New York Liberty, and Chicago Sky in succession.

This stretch could ultimately determine whether the Fever are genuine championship contenders or not. Last season, Indiana defied expectations and came within one win of reaching the Finals, but this year feels different.

With their core healthy and only 11 games left in the regular season, the Fever finally have the opportunity to turn all that potential into something tangible. Now, all that remains to be seen is whether Caitlin Clark and Co. can take that final step and bring a second championship to Indiana.
