Will this Aces juggernaut ever come to a halt? Becky Hammon’s side just leapfrogged the Atlanta Dream into the number 2 spot after a gritty 81-75 comeback win. That’s now 12 straight victories, only two shy of matching Connecticut’s all-time WNBA record of 14 in a row. And at the heart of it all? None other than the reigning MVP, A’ja Wilson!
Wilson ended the night with 34 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks while shooting an impressive 62% from the field. But it was the third quarter where she completely took over — first setting up Chelsea Gray for a big three, then knocking down back-to-back threes herself. That run gave the Aces their first lead, and they never looked back.
The hype was building before the game. Not just because the number 2 and number 3 seeds were facing off, but because fans were eagerly waiting for a Brittney Griner vs. A’ja Wilson showdown. By the final buzzer, though, there was no doubt about who had won the battle between these two superstars. It was A’ja by a landslide.

A’ja was on another level. She finished the game with 4 blocks, and 2 of them came against Brittney Griner, who managed just one field goal all night when guarded by the reigning MVP. The 3,326 fans inside the Gateway Center could only sit back and applaud. This is exactly what greatness looks like.

Fans react to A’ja Wilson’s performance
One fan wrote, “LOUD MVP chants for A’ja in Atlanta.” Another added, “I will never, and I mean NEVER, get tired of watching A’ja Wilson play basketball.” And honestly, who could blame them? The reigning MVP is playing like one. Over the Aces’ 12-game win streak, she’s racked up 322 points and 150 rebounds, averaging 26.8 points and 12.5 rebounds a night. Now, she’s just one 30-point game away from matching Maya Moore and teammate Jewell Loyd’s record of twelve 30-point games in a season. Simply sensational.
But there were more reasons to praise her. She went up against one of the greatest players of this generation — Brittney Griner. In WNBA history, there have been 38 recorded dunks, and 27 of them belong to Griner. Over her 12-year career, she’s led the league in blocks eight times, won two Defensive Player of the Year awards, and averaged 20+ points per game in four different seasons.

So, this matchup was always going to be special. Just a few games ago, Griner and her squad fell short by just two points, but that night the battle between Griner and A’ja was nothing short of a spectacle.

Wilson scored 32 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, passing Brittney Griner and Candace Parker for the most career games with 30-plus points, 10-plus rebounds, and 5-plus blocks in WNBA history. Griner, for her part, was efficient too, shooting 7-of-10 from the field for 16 points and key rebounds. So, the hype heading into this game was sky-high. But this time, it wasn’t even close. As one fan put it, “Two of A’ja’s FOUR blocks are on BG.”
Even the BrickCenter page joined in on the fun, sarcastically posting a video of Griner’s failed attempts against A’ja with the caption, “Brittney Griner was HOOPIN’ tonight 🔥.” But in reality, it was a tough night for the veteran center, who’s still easing back after a neck injury and coming off the bench. Griner went just 1-for-5 from the field, finishing with 2 points and 5 rebounds. And, as mentioned, two of her shots were sent right back by A’ja.

For some reason, Angel Reese always finds her way into every conversation when it comes to player slander. “She was doing her BEST Angel Reese impressions,” one fan joked. Now, what exactly is an “Angel Reese impression”? Probably a dig at her early-season struggles, when she averaged just 10.1 points on 35.8% shooting — a stat line that does resemble Brittney’s 20% from the field in her 10 minutes on the floor. But, as we’ve pointed out time and again, Reese has completely turned her season around, now averaging 14.3 points on 45.8% shooting. So what’s the point?
People can keep making their comparisons, but right now A’ja is building a serious case to challenge Napheesa Collier for the MVP, especially with the way she’s been playing over the last 12 games. So, who’s your pick for MVP this season? And do you see A’ja and Phee going head-to-head in the finals this time around? Drop your thoughts in the comments below!
