The WNBA season finally came to an end last night as the Las Vegas Aces beat the NY Liberty in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals. While the NY side looked in a prime position to level the series after a dominant home display in the previous game, the Aces put up a solid defensive performance in the Barclays Center as they beat the Liberty by a score of 70-69. The win saw the Aces achieve their maiden back-to-back title in their history with the feat being accomplished for the first time in the WNBA since 2001.

Vegas coach Becky Hammon has been a huge part of the Aces’ recent successes with the former Spurs assistant coach overturning the team’s fortunes in a very short span of time. While the 2022 WNBA coach of the year has come in and revolutionized the team, stars Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson have been with the Aces much before Becky’s arrival and have gone through many hardships together. Kelsey recently reflected on these shared hardships and on Aja’s inner self-belief as she spoke of her influence behind closed doors.

From sharing hardships to sharing two WNBA titles

Although A’ja Wilson was drafted a year after Kelsey Plum joined the league the two have been through similar highs and lows with the Aces as they went from missing the playoffs to becoming WNBA champions. While Wilson wasn’t there when the then San Antonio Silver Stars and Kelsey Plum finished 12th in 2017 her first season in the WNBA wasn’t fruitful either as they finished 8th in the league and missed the playoffs completely.

The following years were fruitful for Kelsey and A’ja to say the least as they reached the playoffs in 5 consecutive seasons but were eliminated twice in the Conference Finals while being swept by the Seattle Storm in the 2020 WNBA Finals. After years of hardships and eventual heartbreaks the duo finally reached the promise land in 2022 before repeating similar success this term. Having been discreet after Chelsea gray’s injury in Game 3, Kelsey Plum and A’ja Wilson achieved another piece of WNBA history last night as the duo continues to leave a positive impact on the Aces after a rocky start.
