Despite maintaining strong fan support since her 2024 WNBA debut, Kate Martin struggled to secure a permanent spot on a roster, bouncing between various organizations throughout her first three professional seasons. After signing a multi-year deal with Unrivaled and playing her first season with Breeze BC, Unrivaled made a surprising announcement about Martin’s future.

In their official roster update announcement ahead of season three, which begins early next year, Unrivaled President of Basketball Clare Duwelius revealed that the league and Martin had “reached a mutual contract termination agreement.”

“We’re grateful for Kate’s contributions to Unrivaled over the past two seasons and the positive impact she’s had on the league and her clubs,” Duwelius said per the official announcement. “We wish her all the best and will always celebrate her as one of our inaugural athletes who believed in Unrivaled from day one.”

In 2026, Martin played 13 games for Breeze BC and averaged 6.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. Before playing for Breeze BC in season two, the 26-year-old played in the league’s first two seasons, averaging 8.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in six games for Laces BC in 2025.

While they have parted ways, Martin remains thankful for the league’s support.

“I’m incredibly grateful to Unrivaled for the opportunity to be part of its first two seasons. It’s been special to help launch a league that continues to elevate women’s basketball,” said Kate Martin. “While I’m excited about what’s on the horizon for me, I’m so thankful for the people, the competition, and the memories I’ve made in Unrivaled.”

This is a surprising development because Martin signed a multi-year extension with Unrivaled as recently as August 2026, shortly before the Los Angeles Sparks waived her, and she was slated to play in 2027.

However, neither the league that runs during the WNBA offseason nor Martin disclosed the exact details of why they agreed to mutually terminate the contract within three months of signing an extension.

The future for Martin appears increasingly complex. Along with her contract with Unrivaled, Martin struggled to find floor time during the 2026 campaign. A former teammate of Caitlin Clark, Martin bounced from the Los Angeles Sparks to the Chicago Sky, where she logged just two appearances in September on a developmental contract. Concluding the year with career-low statistics across the board, Martin now faces a highly uncertain trajectory in the league.

Despite her departure from Unrivaled, the consensus remains that Kate Martin has plenty of professional basketball ahead of her. While the league will certainly miss her, numerous avenues remain open for the former Iowa standout as she approaches the prime of her career.

Kate Martin Can Look Forward To Developing Her Game

The WNBA can be an incredibly unforgiving landscape for a young prospect trying to find her footing. Since her name was called in the 2024 draft, Martin has been caught in a relentless cycle of transactions, moving from the Las Vegas Aces to the Golden State Valkyries before landing with the Los Angeles Sparks. While becoming a journeyman is hardly a unique fate in a league notorious for its tight rosters, the constant relocation has deprived Martin of the developmental focus she needs.

Whether she secures a role for the 2027 WNBA season or takes an alternate route this winter, the prevailing belief remains unchanged: Kate Martin’s best basketball is still ahead. An international detour might be exactly the catalyst she needs, a dedicated proving ground to sharpen her game, log meaningful minutes, and ultimately engineer a stronger, more refined return to the WNBA.

There is also the distinct possibility of going in a different direction for Martin. Before coming to the WNBA, Martin’s original plan centered on the sidelines, not the hardwood. With her playing options shrinking, it is entirely plausible that an irresistible coaching opportunity might present itself, which would be a good chance to accelerate her initial career goals.

However, the door to professional basketball is far from closed if Martin still wants to compete. Across the globe, international leagues would eagerly welcome a player carrying her high-profile pedigree into the fold. Closer to home, a new frontier is emerging: the upstart UpShot League. Currently midway through its inaugural campaign and already eyeing an eight-team expansion for 2027, it could provide the perfect domestic runway for her next chapter.

No matter what she does and where she lands, Kate Martin fans will continue to support her, as they have consistently done so far.
